When I think of Staind I think of songs about how sad and lonely the singer is feeling. The fastest way to describe that is to say Emo.

Emo-dar is going off the charts…

Seriously.

edit: My bad. That’s The Wh[em]o.

The emo label has been pretty bastardized over the last 6-8 years. Who even knows what it means anymore? If I had a nickel for every dumb message board argument I’ve read about the proper use of ‘emo’…

Yeah, but the

“My love is vengeance,
That’s never free.”

part of the song totally makes up for it. The Staind song is nothing but whining the entire way through.

I’m pretty sure we can classify emo pretty well.

When 90% of your songs can be summarized as “BAWWW”, at least two band members have standard emo hair, and if you’re wearing tons and tons of red or black eyeliner, regardless of gender, and vocals are never lower in range than alto, you’re emo. An obsession with appearing to be from the 1920s-1940s also qualifies, as does crying at some point in every video you make.

By this, I’m pretty sure AFI are the kings of the emo genre.

They always dressed like that, but they used to not totally suck.

The comments on that video included the following:

Anyway, it’s difficult to gauge from that one sample whether the singer really modeled his persona on Glenn Danzig that directly or whether it was just an homage for the video. He’s got a devilock, for god’s sake.

“if you were a true fan you wouldnt care what the music was you would still follow them”

What the fuck?

My deaf aunt has a poster of Jim Morrison on her wall.

For a lot of people, probably most people, “music” is about the whole package, not just the music itself. Music videos, concerts, image, dancing, drinking, drugs, sex. The music itself becomes incidental to the culture that forms around it, and the bands are packaged with this in mind.

Jim Morrison always rocked.

AFI, however…

Yeah, and the last time I saw them live I was the only one around who actually knew that song. I haven’t gone to an AFI show since.

I don’t, unless you’re simply using it as a term for bands you don’t like. I guess it just depends on how little you care that there are pretty significant differences between the reasons why some of those bands aren’t good.

Staind, for instance, made Dysfunction as their first album. I still think Mudshovel holds up (if you listen to it w/o taking account who sang it), but even then you could see problems ahead. Big, weepy problems that are far more linked to emo-ness than nu-ness. Like, it’s not their sound that’s the problem so much as the sentiments and screeching vaginitis driving them.

But it’s all relative, I guess. I had no idea AFI had made songs that weren’t terrible until just now, for instance.

I think screeching vaginitis is an essential component of nu-metal. I guess we’ll have to disagree. To me:

nu-metal: self-absorbed whining backed by muddy guitars and optional hip-hop stylings
emo: self-absorbed whining backed by pop-punk instrumentation and optional dudes making out with each other

Honestly, I always preferred the Offspring version. I didn’t like AFI at that point either, but Miss Murder was an unrecognizable awful band instead of one I just didn’t care for.

Oh dear god, I just checked out some of their music on youtube. Can I apply for membership in the thousand blazing suns club, plz?

This guy’s currently going through the entire 235 released songs for RB from easiest to hardest. I think he’s been going for about 16 hours so far and still has 87 to go. I’m interested to see how he handles the hardest songs in the game after 24 hours of straight playing. So far he’s got 48 FC’s out of 150 songs.

Dumb question: What are FCs?

-Tom

“Full completions”. He didn’t miss any notes on 48 of the songs out of the first 152 songs. And he only failed to get gold stars on 42 of them, by my count.

edit: Also, interestingly, he’s playing on a real drum kit, but he has it set up to only use 4 pads like the regular controller. It seems like a lot of trouble to go to to still play the songs “fake”, you know?

Who is that dude? I don’t see a name or any info about him there.

-Tom

A lot of effort to be awesome, I think you mean.
