Somehow, I missed the fact that in the full track list announcement for Rock Band 2: link, they also mentioned the fact that when the game ships, there will be 20 additional songs available for download for free.
I wonder if these will be bonus/local Boston bands/Indie songs, or something more diverse that includes a variety of eras and genres, like the main set list?
I think signs point to the latter, since they said they wanted the 20 songs to be on the disc but couldn’t get them ready in time.
They interviewed one of the developers on the OXM podcast last week and he couldn’t say whether they were Harmonix bands or other folks, but he did confirm that it was a time constraints issue that kept them off the disc. Given that I seem to recall Cake claiming that they had music in Rock Band 2, I kind of suspect that it’s a mix of both. I mean, a Harmonix game without a Freezepop song is crazy talk.
It sounds like a great way to get people introduced to the whole concept of downloading songs online. Not everyone is as used to the idea as the folks on this board.
I want Cake so very much.

I hope this is true – I was expecting 20 tracks of “bonus song” dreck!
Although I have to say, after thinking about this a bit more, the Rock Band bonus tracks are definitely the best overall of any fake plastic rock to date – GH I, GH II, and GH III each had maybe three good bonus tracks each. More than half of all the RB bonus tracks are fun to play.
I actually prefer free DLC to more songs on the disk. That way I can pick and choose what I want to download. I don’t like Freezepop, for example.

I guess, if you want 80 songs to cost you $159.20 instead of the $60 you’ll pay for the disc.
Wumpus: Robert’s talking about the 20 free songs that will be available at the time of release, not the 80+ songs that come on the $60 disc.
But obviously, you meant to post that in the other “phenomenal Numbers” Rock Band thread.
EDIT: Ah I see you already did.

I’m pretty sure they’d cost $0, being free DLC and all.
Understand that if they are not on there, then…
The Cake was a lie.
Their definition of Cruefest differs from mine. When are they going to release anything from Dr. Feelgood? I really, really, really want Kickstart My Heart.
More Crue I can probably do without (especially from their last album). No idea on the Buckcherry, since it’s from their unreleased album. I imagine it won’t be that special, although Crazy Bitch would have made a great piece of DLC.
But the Sixx AM and SOAD are definitely coming my way. I hope the note charts are good.
I might pick up BYOB and Toxicity. Too bad they’re not including Aerials. Violent Pornography would be a good pick too.
About damn time (SOAD, not Creue). More from the self-titled, please.
Hmmm. There are some SOAD songs I wouldn’t touch, and there’d be some I’d buy at twice the price. They managed to pick a couple I’m actually going to have to think about. Hrmmmm.
Dammit… I know ‘Talking Heads’ finally gets a song in ‘Rock Band 2’, but I want a freakin’ pack now (or better yet, a whole album…). What the hell?

I’m not telling you something you don’t know already… but SOAD are some ugly motherfuckers! Good gawd!
I need ‘nother Skynyrd song soon. Sittin’ here, sippin’ mah Jack Daniels, sobbin’ and singin along with Tuesday’s Gone… Wah!
