RAWR! RAWR! COOOOKIE OR DIEEEE!!

Looking forward to playing this pack when I get back from work this afternoon, although I’m not sure how well it will go with my fake band. Machine Head is no Sepultura, but it will do.

It would be, short of a few crap songs they could lose along the way (Psychotron springs to mind). I am surprised with this pick and Peace Sells…I don’t mind either song, but I can think of plenty of new and old Megadeth I’d prefer. With any luck they’ll consider adding Holy Wars and Tornado of Souls.

I think the win/win is having newer songs by bands pushing albums bundled with some of their old hits. You give me something from Countdown and Youthanasia and a new track, I’d be pretty happy.

It’s kind of weird, LK, that you just called Countdown and Youthenasia “old”.

Tornado of Souls is alright. I always liked Five Magics. There aren’t many songs with a more cataclysmic ending than that one (although there aren’t many songs with more ridiculous lyrics, either).

If I owned it on cassette as a young teenager, it’s old. Sorry! The way I organize Megadeth is pre Countdown, the Countdown-Youthanasia golden years, and the current age.

Tornado of Souls is alright. I always liked Five Magics. There aren’t many songs with a more cataclysmic ending than that one (although there aren’t many songs with more ridiculous lyrics, either).

Sometimes, their lyrics work for me despite being absurdly self important (both Countdown and Youthanasia are full of those moments), but a lot of those older songs really have to have their shit together for me to enjoy them. Hangar 18, Tornado, and Holy Wars make it, Peace Sells is barely in the middle range, and tons of their other stuff is just unbearable. I have found occasional songs to like in their current gen material, although what I get the most out of these days is their “Rude Awakening” live double album. I haven’t really kept up since then, though.

I think it’s mostly about what you heard first. I think we’re pretty close to the same age (I’m 29), and I had Rust In Peace (and no other Megadeth) before Countdown To Extinction was released. If anybody who cares is unfamiliar with the unremastered version of Five Magics, it’s here. Peace Sells never did that much for me, as it was not my first exposure to Megadeth and it’s quite a bit different from Rust In Peace.

Countdown is Megadeth’s Black Album, and my feelings about it are pretty much the same as about Metallica’s – it’s fine for what it is, but it’s not “real” Megadeth.

I don’t ever listen to this kind of stuff any more except as a pleasant trip down memory lane, so I’m certainly no authority. Five Magics, Hangar 18, and Holy Wars are my favorite Megadeth songs, and I will listen to Tornado of Souls and Polaris, too, but that’s about it.

For what it’s worth, Constant Motion is well worth buying.

I’m not big on “real” distinctions, but I think Megadeth’s transition to a more modern sound was a lot smoother than Metallica’s. Countdown and Youth are two of my favorite albums, although I went through a long period where I thought I was through with them. If you ever want to check out the broader scope of their work in a single dose, that double album I recommended does a good job.

Anyway, getting back to the pack, I liked the Machine Head, and I think the Killswitch has some potential if I practice it. All of the others are too damned hard at the moment. Dream Theater is the only one I hated, but that’s obviously not going to be the case across the board.

The Airbourne is not hard and probably just right for people (sound wise) that were thrilled with Bang Camaro/Def Leppard parallels. It sounds like a lot of other bands at once, and is competent for what it is.

I may end up only buying the Airbourne track. Dream Theater looks too damn hard and Megadeth just doesn’t look like fun on guitar.

I really don’t know about that. I think the only parallel of that sort that can be made unambiguously is that Cryptic Writings is very much their Load, where they turned their back on their roots completely. I’m also not a huge Megadeth fan, so grain of salt.

That’s the second time you mentioned Biohazard, but as far as I can tell, there is no Biohazard in that pack.

I’m super-jealous that I can’t play these. That Dream Theater song looks SO fun on drums.

I meant Machine Head. For some reason the two are interchangeable all of a sudden.

I’m definitely picking this pack up… I like the Machine Head, Dream Theater, Killlswitch Engage, and Megadeth songs. I understand how people who aren’t metal fans wouldn’t like MH, of course, but that song should be fun/crazy to play. Are they editing out profanity? (On a side note, there are better songs from that MH album that would have been better choices… oh well).

It’s amazingly fun on drums - it may be my new favorite drum song. It has everything - crazy fills, a fast driving beat, a couple interludes of hot syncopated all-over-the-set action, and even a short burst of thrash (but not too much).

The drum part during the guitar solo is wicked.

Failed out at 70% on Expert on my sightread. Going to be a fun nut to crack.

New tracks next week:

Devo - Girl U Want
Devo - Through Being Cool
Duran Duran - Girls on Film
Duran Duran - Rio
The Janitors - Get Your Rock On

All tracks are masters, with the Devo tracks being new recordings made for Rock Band.

All tracks 160 points except for the Janitors, which is 80.

I love Harmonix.

Fuck yes. The Devo stuff will be boring as hell on drums, but the Duran Duran is a clear must buy.

I really love Rio. I wish they would release Electric Barbarella though. For some reason I really dig that song. Reminds me of my youth perhaps!

New Moon on Monday would also be a great choice. Hungry Like a Wolf is already planned for RB 2.

Duran Duran is a get for me for sure. I don’t know anything about Devo.

The bass line in Girls on Film will be AWESOME.

Don’t believe me? Go pull up the youtube clip. And minimize the window, since it’s NSFW. :)
