Rumors of a Military Coup in Turkey

It’s all over Twitter-verse, and pictures are coming in of military-blocked bridges around the capital. More and more reports, albeit not from any legitimate news sources. Alternatively, it could be a response to suspected terrorist activity.

Istanbul’s Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge were both closed on Friday, local television channels reported, without giving a reason.

Dogan News Agency footage showed cars and buses being diverted.

Great links, Arctangent.

Initial reports of responding to a terrorist threat don’t make a lot of sense when people are talking about warplanes, tanks, and helicopters being put into play.

First thing you do is close the internet…

So long, it looks ok

Its probably not. Or was a crappy attemp that already failed.

No details on Turkish news sources except the bridge closing. The first details may come from reporters outside the country.

FB, Twitter, and Youtube have supposedly been blocked. Reportedly, the Turkish PM addressed there was either an unsuccessful or an ongoing coup/“insurgency” on TV before things went dark.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said that its an uprising attempt from inside the army.

“We will punish it the hardest way,” he said, according to broadcaster CNN Türk.

Yildirim says “it would be wrong to call it a coup” but that there has been an attempt by “part of the military”.

He describes it as an “illegal attempt” to seize power.

Turkey would never allow any “initiative that would interrupt democracy”, he said, and promised the perpetrators “will pay the highest price”.

That said, tons of rumors that it’s still ongoing

Reported rumors of aircraft and gunfire in the capital

Its horrible either way but once the outcome is determined the resulting purge will be a bloodbath. This is going to be horrific for whomever loses.

If there ever was a Turkish leader that deserved to suffer the fate of a coup, it is Erdogan.

One person said “Turkey: one of the only places in the world where the response to news of a military coup is “It’s about darned time.””

As rshetts says, it’s still going to be awful either way, but I can understand the sentiment.

Brexit and people like Putin, Erdogan* or Chavez remind us that democracy is not perfect. Is flawed and sometimes allow for bad guys to take control and push policies that are against the general well being of the country.

But I dont think a military coup is the solution, not even in turkey where they seems to identfy secularism with the military.

Should I add here Cameron? has ben a disaster for UK.

Agreed in general, Teiman. But if he has eliminated democratic rules to the extent that it’s impossible to vote him out, there has to be some means of getting rid of him.

If they did it right, Erdogan is finished whether they succeed or not. I’m actually surprised they were able to get to point of executing it. One of the first things he did was neuter the military leadership when he took power.

Portuguese TV is reporting rebels are actually on the Islamist side, so, it’s either FUD to try and get Western countries not to back them, or things might be getting even more interesting than they’ve been lately. :(

Niza, yesterday

Yes, kinda hoping it is true that they get rid of him quickly.

WTF!? Just what the west needs, an IS-controlled Turkey!
