Ryuichi Sakamoto has died

RIP. Impossible to overstate his influence on the way electronic music developed through the past four decades or so.

What a legend. This NY Times article and playlist from July, 2018 made me love him even more. (Gift link.) It reminded me of your Dinner Music Project, trig! Which I’m now listening to. :)

RIP. Such a huge loss.

Absolute legend. RIP.

I’m not super familiar with his work, but he did the score to one of my all-time favorite movies, an anime about the development of the space program on an Earth-like planet.

He was kind of down on the project itself (according to translated interviews excerpted into Wiki articles). Sometimes his synths don’t have quite enough oomph that, say, a traditional orchestra might have had, but there are some music cues in Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise that I won’t ever forget.

RIP and fuck cancer.

It took a fair bit of growing up before I realized this movie is kind of stilted and dumb (although I suspect the novel by Paul Bowles holds up). But the Ryuichi Sakamoto theme never lost an iota of its power.
