I just came in to ask Andy’s question of a month ago. The current price on Amazon has me tempted, but I’ve never ventured into the series before and wondered if it was worth backpedaling.

In short, is there anything significant that I’ll be missing story-wise if I just pick up 3?

Johnny Gat is a badass. That’s all you need to know.

The stories are insignificant, but there are minor nods to SR2 in SR3. SR2 also has some interesting characters that don’t get as much (or absolutely no) screentime in the third one.

Nothing substantial, just fluff material. SR3 functions just fine as a standalone game.

Both useful to know, thanks guys!

Did I read that this was on sale this weekend? If so, where?

Amazon. Game activates on Steam.

The story in SR3 is just a porn-flimsy excuse to let you play with VTOLs and TRON tanks. That said, it is genuinely lulzy in places. You absolutely don’t need to have played the others, because the story makes no sense at all. Just enjoy the octopus gun.

I would absolutely recommend the shit out of SR2 (as long as you’ve got a computer much beefier than the game really ought to require), especially modded with the Gentlemen of the Row mod. But you don’t need to have played it to appreciate SR3. I just think it’s a better game aside from the porting issues. And I say this as someone who loves SR3.

I never even played any of the series and started with SR3, which is batshit insane and hella fun. I love the crap out of it.

I’d recomend you first play SR3 to enjoy the polished game, then play SR2 with the Gentlemens mod and enjoy the bigger world. That way you wont play SR3 first and only think about all the great features from SR2 you wish they kept.

A while back on the qt3 games podcast, Tom would ask every guest if they would prefer a Horde of Zombies on a short bus, or the ability to call Burt Reynolds and a SWAT team. I had no idea what they were talking about, but chalked it up to general podcast wackiness.

This all makes sense now that I finally played that mission the other day, and I have to say that it was one of the most difficult decisions I ever had to make in my life, but also the most rewarding. Decisions with consequences, my ass, Mass Effect…

So, I’m this far in to the game, but I haven’t really done a lot of the Activities, as I’ve been saving them for later, but now that I’m attempting them, my Notoriety with SAG makes it extremely difficult some times. Is it better to have a lot of this early, when first introduced, or sprinkle it throughout your game, as you level up and become more powerful?

I remember being asked the question and having the same basic experience (playing SR3 later and being hit with the idea). The choice was a no-brainer for me in the game, since it’s Burt Reynolds. Who wouldn’t pick him (aside from Tom)?

For the activities, work through a few more of the main missions and you should notice a good time to go back and polish off any activities you’ve left unfinished.

Haha, I finished the main story a couple of days ago, and I had the exact same experience. I was halfway through the zombie mission when I made the connection.

I went with Burt Reynolds in the end.

As for the activities, I guess tackling them earlier would more sense, since your equipment is predetermined most of the time, so your level doesn’t really matter, and every bit of control they give nets you more hourly income for the rest of the game.

Once you finish the main story STAG will back off though, removing those pesky restricted areas, and you’ve only a handful of missions left.

Well… me. I choose the zombies. Were it 1970s Burt, I may have gone with that, but it is, unfortunately, contemporary, “I know I’m Burt Reynolds”, Burt Reynolds, which takes some shine off the mustache.

Also, I still get to call Burt any time and have him reset my notoriety. No SWAT team, though…

I assume in-game quips regarding the 70s just don’t quite cut it, then. Probably comes down to me being something of a power gamer and wanting to get both a call-in and a homie instead of just a call-in.

So I picked this up on the Steam Summer Sale. I’d love to play it, but apparently I am afflicted with the seemingly common bug that I cannot play the game in DX11 Fullscreen. The game just locks up every time. I can play in DX9 and DX11 Windowed, but DX11 Fullscreen is a no go. Googling I see this has been a problem for at least the last 8 months and surprisingly there has been no patch to fix this? Anyone affected by this and know of a workaround?

Picked up clones and gangstas DLC. Havent played gangstas yet, but did not really like clones - way shorter than i expected(like 3 missions) and i found the audio grating at times…i’m glad it was on sale…

First I’ve heard of it, and I ran in DX11 fullscreen. What sort of video card/what version of Windows?

Nvidia 675M on Windows 7 64-bit.

There are several threads about this problem on the official forums and the Steam forums, some dating back to November/December 2011, but it seems it was never addressed.

Like others in those threads, I can play on dx9 window/full and dx11 windowed (which is what I am doing now). I was able to isolate the problem specifically to dx11 fullscreen. O well.

A fine quality Shark hat comes with the Shark gun DLC, I didn’t know this till I was changing into some new clothes!
