Is there any explanation for why Doctor <sic> Laura decided to start shouting the n-word at the poor woman? I read a transcript at Huffington Post, but it kind of starts in media res. The woman was in an interracial relationship. Was her call about her husband making racial jokes or using the n-word itself? If so, wow, nice response Doctor <sic> Laura!
Let me help abridge Dr. Laura’s first amendment rights by linking to audio of what she actually said.
It’s important to realize that this woman called as a fan, looking for advice, and got a completely tangential rant instead.
That crossed my mind, of course. The point being to discredit her with undecideds, not her base. She’s demonstrated that she’s batshit crazy enough that nothing will put off people who support her now.
From what little exposure I’ve had to “Dr.” Laura, that’s pretty much par for the course. That’s what she does. She spews hatred and unjustified assumptions in almost every call, but it’s not usually racially charged like this. It’s pretty clear she’s had some racist anger stewing for a while, and that the caller just managed to unintentionally cause her to open the floodgates. The comments about Obama’s election seem telling to me.
When I worked in a warehouse I had a friend who always turned her on and listen to her. After the first rampantly homophobic comment I realized I’d had enough of Doctor <sic> Laura. Sadly, no one had bothered to invent the MP3 player yet.
Anyway, to this day I’m simultaneously surprised and disappointed that she has any fans at all. Her repeatedly calling her caller ‘dear’ is pretty bad, but statements like

It’s important to understand that not only does Dr. Laura hate black people, she hates other women as well. The only way this caller could have pushed Dr. Laura’s buttons any more is if she was a gay, unwed mother.
I find that rant nearly impossible to parse. She’s saying by hiding the issues of racism in economic policies that the problem has merely been burried, not resolved?
I knew about the religious fanaticism and the homophobia, but I didn’t know about the misogyny. A quick google search bore that out. Ugh.
Jumping down her caller’s throats is pretty much the point of her show.
I listened to her a bit a loooooooong time ago but I’m guessing her formula has not changed. Single mother of three calls up to whine about getting left out of her sister’s wedding just because she banged the groom a few years ago and you can just imagine the self righteous clucking yentas (that’s right) turning up the radio to hear Herr Doktor tear said single mother a new one.

One thing that the commenter’s don’t seem to realize: her speech was paid for by the foundation that supports the California State University system, not by taxpayers. Jerry Brown AG tried to block it anyway and was not permitted to do so. However, they at least got the full contract published.
