Being the “front runner” now basically means nothing - at this point in the 2008 election cycle Hillary looked like she’d coast in unopposed in the democratic primaries.

Pretty much every Republican I know despises Palin.

Same here.

Is Huckabee not running in 2012? Hasn’t decided? I actually like him, even though I’d never vote for him. Seems like the Republicans would want to go with Pastor Mike, who is likable and not particularly divisive, rather than someone as polarizing as Palin.

Huckabee is probably running, but he hasn’t announced. I’m not sure if he’d be stronger than Romney.

I’d much prefer Huckabee over Romney. Technically I should like the social liberal economic conservative far more than the social conservative and ever-so-slightly less economic conservative, but Romney has demonstrated a truly shameless ability to turn on a dime and do virtually anything if it polls well; there’s no telling what the fuck he’ll do. At least Huckabee is predictably mildly annoying.

God, I can only imagine the spin and hypocrisy when Romney attacks “Obamacare.”

More importantly, I suspect he’s a robot. You didn’t trick me last time either with your “Steve Forbes” dress-up skin, you metallic monster!

Huckabee is that rarest of beasts, a very smart guy who somehow manages to be wrong about a bunch of things. Romney just looks like an evangelist toady, I would expect Bush3 if he gets elected. Corporate puppetmasters and lots of smiling “aw-shucks” moments.

H.

Yeah, I have a few Republican family members and they would not vote for Palin. Ever. She’s dead as a political vehicle. All she’s good for is face time on Fox and getting soccer moms excited about being bears. “Children, the future, real Americans,e tz, bzzzzz…”

Huckabee would be a much better person if he stopped pretending like he likes Republicans. His appearance on the Daily Show was enough to convince me that he’s pretty disgusted with his own party.

Oh, and the religious zealotry doesn’t help either IMO.

He did put up some token resistance before conceding that the Republicans should just do whats right and vote for the bill.

Huck seems like a decent moderate guy that would do well in national office. Except for this point, When someone says, “We can’t change the Bible, but we can change the Constitution”, I get really scared.

Romney is an extremely capable guy who made hundreds of millions of dollars as legitimately as you can running a hedge fund. He seems completely hollow because he’s convinced that his Mormonism will kill him politically (and by all accounts he is as true a believer as Huckabee), so he constantly prunes his public persona of any genuine ties to his actual self. Both Bush and Romney are guilty of dissimulation, but it seems to me that Bush truly wanted to be the persona, whereas Romney has just cynically accepted lying 24/7 as a cost of power. It’s also possible that after almost a decade of single-minded obsession over attaining national office, Romney has simply lost his soul.

Having lived in Massachusetts and seen a lot of Romney before he went national, the guy kind of reminds me of Ellis’ Smiler. I have zero evidence to back this up, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Mitt Romney’s hobbies included fishing, fantasy football and strangling prostitutes to death.

He doesn’t seem the type that would be into fantasy football.

I wouldn’t say nothing. Hillary lost by a hair.

Baseball, maybe?

Hillary also had a lot more going for her. Either way, a lot changes between now and election day.

So he’s a self-aware Bush? That’s no better for America, just sadder for him. It is kind of hopeful that he actually succeeded at something in his life, though. Bush was uber-Michael Scott, promoted five levels too high for his competence.

H.

Romney has to be robotic and pander because the GOP is full of religious bigots that don’t like his form of Christianity. Which doesn’t say much for him that he’s willing to sell out like that, but it’s certainly understandable.

Of course that’s assuming he was being true to himself as governor and isn’t really the total douchebag he seemed to become during the last election.

I’m surprised at how many people don’t know someone that would vote for Palin. The Tea Partiers I know would vote for her before any of the other major contenders other than Romney. She says all the right phrases that lack substance they seem to latch on to.

Sure, if you like sneering and condescending, she’s your candidate!

Her problem is that a lot of people like their presidents to be presidential, not the stuck-up bitch from high school they hated.
