My understanding that the symbolic image thing started as a bit of a cheat because he didn’t think he’d be able to capture real people effectively with his art, and then it sort of became convention.
Seeing his version of Palin…I can’t say that I blame him.
I can see that being the reason, but I always found it really distancing. It was just too abstract for my tastes. Whatever the flaws in his representation of Palin, I much prefer what he’s done here to Bush’s Centurion helmet or Arnold’s forearm.
Much of the time, of course, he managed to get around it by keeping faces out of it, as with his perennial use of dialog showing just the white house in the foreground. So far he’s avoided representing Obama in any fashion through that dodge.
Obligatory “Doonesbury was better in the 70s” post.
Obligatory “Doonesbury always has and still does suck” post.
Former half-term Alaskan governor Sarah Palin says that America is on the “road to ruin” because the country is out of step with the late President Reagan’s values.
“This is dangerous. This is insane,” she said. “This is not the road to national greatness, it is the road to ruin.”
She alluded to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address last month, saying it amounted to a statement that “the era of big government is here to stay.”
Palin was asked to talk about Reagan’s 1964 speech, “A Time for Choosing,” which he gave on behalf of then-Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. In it, he talks at length about the dangers of high taxes and encroaching big government, as well as the necessity of strong national security.
She said the stark choices the nation faces are not unlike those Reagan talked of in the 1960s, only the economy of today is worse, from home foreclosures to high unemployment.
She said Reagan saw the danger of President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society programs, and “he refused to sit down and be silent as our liberties were eroded by an out of control, centralized government that overtaxed and overreached in utter disregard of constitutional limits.”
“We could choose one direction or the other, socialism or freedom and free markets,” Palin said.
Is this the same Reagan that raised taxes something like sixteen times, and gave us the largest budget deficits in US history (at least until George W. topped the record)? The blind spots that today’s uber-conservatives develop when talking about Reagan are nothing short of astonishing. He’s less historical figure than folk hero at this point, with as much fiction as fact mashed into his legendary exploits.

What scares me the most is the continuing rhetoric about building national security. From what threat? What the fuck are you trying to protect us from Sarah?
Oh man! Those Great Society programs sure were awful!
God forbid the federal government tell me I can’t refuse to serve black people! THAT’S SOCIALISM!
Aliens!
We’re not still doing cold-war things, it’s preparation for an attack from outer space.
The answer is pretty obvious…

Did you guys see that she’s trying to trademark her name and Bristol’s name? Seriously.
And the Trademark office rejected her application because it wasn’t signed.
They thought the X was a mistake?
Hahahahaha. Reagan as a paragon of small government? Hahahahaha!
So, does she really believe this? Also, what values does she have in mind? Reagan was very outspoken about those dirty hippies and the dangers of drug use, etc. Under his watch, the PMRC came into being. What liberties?
Oh, the free market. Is this the same free market that just allowed the banks to collapse our economy? Wait, she blames that on legislation, doesn’t she? So the problem is that the banks weren’t free ENOUGH. Is that right?
I honestly can’t follow the thinking here. She must be putting some sort of thought together, but I can’t make sense of it.
Trying to make sense of it will only cause headaches.
