It’s going to be hard for them to credibly maintain “Well, these are the only two accusations, and there’s nothing to them, let’s vote.” I mean, I sort of expect them to non-credibly say that and try to do that, but if today’s NBC/WSJ generic ballot poll is any indicator, they’ve lost the House in November, and it’s possible they’re going to fuck up the Senate if they plow ahead.

Not that such considerations have stopped them before.

What will be interesting is that I would imagine senators with experience in courtrooms – like Kamala Harris, for one – will try to force Kavanaugh to say things that might later be shown to be false and thus used as a lever to that rarest of birds: judicial impeachment.

Yeah, they damned the torpedoes back in 2016. Since then it’s been make hay while the sun shines, and the sun is setting, hopefully in the midterms. Any vote in favor of morality, legality, or common sense is contrary to their policy and program.

Here’s my view:

If Dr. Ford testifies on Thursday and there are NO OTHER allegations from anyone about misbehavior by Brett Kavanaugh, then the GOP can credibly try to mount a he said/she said defense.

BUT…we now have at least one VERY credible story from another woman, and the Avenatti stuff that just dropped.

And now when Dr. Ford testifies (if this even gets to that point), she’s going to have the weight of public opinion on her side. She’s not going to be the single accuser. She’s going to be one of many. And if her story is credible, told with honesty and integrity, it’s going to make Brett Kavanaugh absolutely toxic.

I think they pull the nomination.

Ford’s lawyer wanted Kavanaugh to testify first. I’d like to see that happen. But it was shot down right away.
