I think Nate Silver’s take is correct: There will be polling this week, and that polling may drive the end result here.

I’m guessing I won’t be polled. I’ve never been polled.
Well if people who support Kavanaugh don’t talk to the FBI, then all they’ll have is statements from the accusers. That can be pretty bad for the person being accused.

I imagine the vast majority of people hang up, or ask to be put on a do not call list.

I get political poll calls multiple times a week. It’s actually the main reason I keep a landline active.

Except they’re the FBI, accusations wont “prove” anything and the Senate will just hand wave it away.
It’s all a ploy. Honestly, our best hope is that Trump refuses to do it and it forces the Senators that are attempting the ploy to put up or shut up and vote against him.

Hell, I get them on my cell phone.
One of the biggest things a pre-hearing investigation would have done is to establish the definition of things like “Devil’s Triangle” and “Boofed” without a chance for those interviewed to coordinate responses. Same is true of any explanations of what the events on the calendar said. Now that Kavanaugh has made statements about them, people can just agree with those statements on a few things, say they don’t remember some other things, and end up supporting him.

Yeah… I think Trump is distancing himself from Kavanaugh a bit. If Kavanaugh fails, it’s McConnell’s fault. If he is confirmed, he was Trump’s pick.

Well, an intern obviously wrote that one. I guess Lindsey explained to him what he needed to do.

I love this timeline in which decades of Supreme Court decisions may hinge on boofs, Devil’s Triangles, and 'skis.

WB Yeats - applies quite well to yesterday’s proceedings:
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity…
…And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Thousands of journos are probably investigating this now, too. Which will be the first to prove he perjured himself on Thursday?
How many DKE’s from that era are getting phone calls this weekend?

The big question is what is the standard the FBI investigation is supposed to meet? Evidence of possible criminal activity? Certainty beyond a reasonable doubt? If there’s wiggle room they’ll vote to confirm

Thank you for that, it’s certainly captures the emotion.
A thread of hope:
But this is also what I hope gets more scrutiny and discussion in the media:

Thank you for this. I needed that laugh.
One interesting thing that could come out of the investigation is lying to the Feds is a federal crime. It’s not like Barney Fife comes along and you lie to him. So, if someone lies to the FBI and they get in a mood about it, it could really come down on them.
