I had a knockoff slim jim one time I bought from a gas station at the counter from a little jar. Advertised as 100% beef. Flipped it over and the ingredients were “beef, beef lips, something something, spices, etc etc”

Apparently it had like 11% by volume beef lips so it was listed as a separate ingredient. So, that slim jim knockoff was a significant volume of beef lips. I always wondered if they bought just the lips. Now that I see that box, I finally have my answer. There is some supplier somewhere who will sell you beef lips separately.

This stuff was a staple of my lunchtime diet growing up. Basically mushed-up baloney plus mayonnaise and pickle relish. I used to have fun reading the ingredients to my friends when they came over because pork hearts were in there. It was yummy because we didn’t know any better.

I had always been told that some unscrupulous restaurants used pig rectums as calamari, which I just assumed was an urban myth. Now that I’ve seen cases of inverted boneless pork rectums I’m not so sure.

This is almost certainly false, in that there’s no actual evidence for it ever happening, ever.

It’s perfectly reasonable to package and sell inverted pig rectum for use in sausage making, etc though, which it is in fact used for.
