One of the replies suggested this shot looks extra crazy due to the photographer using a very long exposure time, maybe as much as 10 minutes. But indeed, it’s a real thing (volcanic lightning) that I had never heard of until moments ago.

The first time I saw this phenomena was a few years back when a volcano in Iceland ( or maybe Greenland ) fired off some pretty impressive lightning. I do believe that the person who said that your shot was a long exposure is correct. That doesn’t make it any less impressive though.

There are photo editing techniques that can layer different levels of exposure to produce this type of result.
This guy’s instagram is full of these time-benders.
Stop posting those. They make me feel old.
