Pushbutton channels? Pffffttt. We used pliers to change the channel…
Haha and a wire hanger for an antenna, no doubt!
God I feel old now. Our first was a black-and-white.
Our first set was also black and white and approximately the size of a small sedan. The second sat atop the non-working first set and got exactly 4 channels - ABC, NBC, CBS and some weird station we had to search for in the UHF band that only broadcast in black and white.
We lived out in the sticks so it wasn’t until around 1980 that we got a few other options. My parents didn’t even get cable until almost 1990 and by that time I was loooong gone.
Man, I had like two friends with console TVs in their shag carpeted basements. They were pretty long in the tooth even then, but soooo much grander than the silly-looking plastic box on its silly-looking cart that my dad shelled out for with deep reluctance when someone told my mom about PBS.
The less common, but occasionally quite impressive console hi-fi:
A friend of mine has one of these (minus the speaker enclosures) built onto one of the walls in her living room. Very mid-century modern, and I like it a lot. I’ve offered to update it with some modern components, but she likes it fine as a place to stuff sofa cushions.
From what I’ve seen, they could not do much worse than they’ve been doing…
I feel like I’ve seen the movie version of that book.
I knew science was wrong!

EDIT: Oh, man, wrong thread! Sorry, I had this tab open on my phone and uploaded here by accident. Enjoy, I guess? :)
