SimCity 4

Is gold. Slated to be released on Jan 14th. Looks to be a damn beautiful game, with most of the gameplay mechanics that everyone’s been waiting on for years. Though I’m wary of how EA will handle expansions and the “bonus” pre-order cd’s, I’m sure it’ll be nice to just have a game that’s along the lines of how fun SC2000 was, and not as tedious as SC3000.

Wow! That is cool. Seems it just was announced a few months ago. Time flys, I guess.

I think this has got to be one of the only non-indie games coming out that I’m actually looking forward to. SC3000 was a complete waste of time, I never had a chance to play SC2000, but I loved SC and all of its expansions so I’m hoping this will actually bring boost me through the 90’s and into the 21st century. I’m just hoping that the (SHIFT) FUND cheat works because I can’t play sim games worth a damn usually.

I thought the original SimCity was far more playable.

Johnny Wilson totally f*cked up SimCity 2000 by telling them that they should make players lay water pipes below the cities.

Then, on top of it all, the pipe code had bugs and didn’t work right.

Pipe frustration pretty much ruined the game for me. Talk about tedium…

As for SC3000, considering how late in the process they completely trashed their original 3D “zoom down to street level” idea and reengineered the game from the start, it wasn’t too bad…

The thing that ruined it for me was that I couldn’t see anything. All the buildings were so tall that things got blocked out. The fact that it ran like a slideshow on my computer at the time didn’t help either :)

I found SC3000 as worthy a successor to the original as 2000 was. Making deals for water, power, or garbage with neighboring towns was a nice addition. Having said that, I wouldn’t want them to add too many more features into the game; while I’m looking forward to SC4, I’m a little afraid that that might be what will happen as they try to integrate The-Sims-y stuff in to grab that audience. Do I really want to manage my city from three different levels? One was enough…

I agree. One of the features is that you can import your Sims characters into the game. It bothers me that Maxis actually spent time working on adding that to the game. I’d rather see them focus on making a great game; not creating tie-ins to its other franchise.

Still, I’m psyched about this game and can’t wait for it to hit the shelves.

There are 8 Million reasons why that was inevitable.

Considering that the extent of the import feature is to bring in the face and name of your sim, I think it probably took all of 20 minutes to code.

“BUT THEY’rE TRYING 2 TurnN IT N-2 SIMS-CITAY!1!!”

Look, folks, we’ve been able to track “sims” since SimTower. That was the first idea of it. Then SimAnt, then SimFarm. This is nothing new. Get the fuck over it.

Newsflash, Met_K: SimTower took place in a big TOWER, not a whole city. SimAnt was a backyard with one hive. SC4 is proposing both having you manage multiple neighboring cities AND tweaking your individual Sim-people. I theoretically like the idea of looking at specific people, but I’m skeptical that broadening the scope of the game that much will really make the game better.

They had to add something to try to freshen up the rotting carcass that was SC3k, but checking on your little Sim bastards seems like extra busy work.

The Sims in SimCity 4 aren’t as detailed as The Sims. Basically they are local advisors that give you feedback on how they feel about the neighborhood they live in. You don’t have to manage them, other than responding to their whines about not having water, or too much crime, or that their job sucks and they need more edumacation so they can get a better one.

My impression is that they are like your little customers in Rollercoaster Tycoon. They have basic needs/wants, and you can sort of track them as they go along to get a perspective on what’s right/wrong with your city.

Personally, I think that’s a good idea and fits in with the improved city feedback that they are touting about.

Dat thread bump.

Well this certainly takes the prize for longest thread bump. I just read an article yesterday talking about how SimCity 4 was the best city builder of all time.

If I could have SimCity 4 with bigger zones regions I would be happy.
