Skin Deep - Blendo Games, stealth on a spaceship

I honestly can’t tell if I hate this or love this.

I approve, as a fan of Thirty, Bone, and Cowboy. (Someone should start a legal franchise called that.) I love that Blendo takes itself very precisely as seriously as it needs to. Favorite moment of the trailer was that “Cough Blood” was an option after stepping on glass.

Whats with the new trend (Kojima et al) of picking horrifically impaled things from your body in games? Who wants to look at that? Its just disgusting. Shame because a stealth game on a spaceship is an excellent setting.

A suitably bizarre trailer for a Blendo game. I’m keen to play a goofy, experimental shooter.

New? It goes back at least to Far Cry 2.

Anyway, in this particular case, it seems to be riffing on a popular movie to sell your role in the game:

Thats true, although Farcry 2 is kinda fitted and didnt seem quite so cringe making to look at. But maybe its just my old man tastes showing :)

Please tell me it isn’t VR only anymore.

Wait. Plucking shards of glass out of myself in VR? Sign me up. Not.

I still find that scene very hard to watch. Yet ‘shoot the glass’ was such a great bit of writing, too…

Yeah. Die Hard is my Christmas Movie - must have watched it dozens of times - and I still feel squeamish in that scene. Classic!

It was never VR. Their space shooter, Flotilla 2 is the VR one.

It actually always bothered me that the German guy understood the phrase in English better than German.

Hmm, yeah, that was obviously for the audience’s benefit but I suppose it wasn’t quite played right.

I just love the chess-match aspect of it – Gruber applying a bit of knowledge he acquired while posing as one of the hostages and meeting McClane.

See, I feel like the way Hans yells loudly and over-enunciates and gestures broadly at the windows really sells that bit, like you get how a non-English speaker would have put it together regardless. “OK sure, glass, whatever, shut up already.”

More Blendo the better but this looks to be the most conventional game he has ever done, barring the odd quirks. Why would you want to cough up blood by player choice? Sneezing bar in a ventilation shaft made a little more sense.

My thoughts as well, but I can’t imagine it won’t have the odd quirks. I suspect there’s a lot we aren’t seeing in the trailer.

Kinda feels to me like a game that’s almost entirely odd quirks, spread across the hearty but boring bread of FPS. It’s not like the trailer is showcasing ten different cool effects of a single FPS innovation. It’s showing this eccentric list of five or six totally different features. I don’t know how it will all work together, but Brendan Chung vomiting ideas onto an FPS sounds worthwhile and very much something he would do. The main thing I wonder is if it’s primarily single player or multiplayer.

Also…

SKIN DEEEEP.

There’s a Steam page now, and a new trailer with cats.

You know you love a person’s games when you fire up a freaking client just to add her new game to your wishlist.

Annapurna Interactive is publishing, which for me feels like a perfect match for Blendo Games. I’m glad.
