I’m not sure about that specific quest (didn’t do the Companions stuff this playthrough), but some quests have you go through a dungeon and then exit to an outdoor area you can’t reach otherwise, to get to the real destination, so this might be one of those cases. When you’re inside, do you get quest arrows for that one that lead to a different exit?
Yeah, that’s what I thought too. I totally cleared out the castle (Falrath’s Tooth, or whatever it’s called), and that’s what took me hours to do. The whole time the quest arrow was just pointing at the door I came in through, but I was hoping I’d find another door. But the whole place was a circular building, and I eventually got to the same point after doing the whole circle around the inside of the castle. There’s only one other exit, and it leads to a side entrance, even farther away from where the quest arrow is pointing.
After looking it up online, this is apparently a Radiant Quest, and is different for everyone. I just got screwed or something with my particular location.
Hmm, I’ve completed the Companions questline and I don’t recall anything at Falrath’s Tooth, but you do indeed go to Gallows Rock and clear out some bad guys. I’m not quite following your post, though; are you on “The Silver Hand” quest? http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_Silver_Hand If so, is it possible you also have another quest selected in your journal in addition to that one, and that’s causing the quest-marker arrow to show up for something unrelated?
EDIT: Per your post preceding this one - the Gallows Rock quest (“The Silver Hand”) is not a radiant quest, it’s a main plot quest for the Companions so it’s identical for everyone.
No, I finished The Silver Hand quest, I’m now on a radiant quest: Retrieval, which randomly chooses a spot for you to go retrieve this particular item. For me it happens to be at Falrath’s Tooth.
Sorry, yeah, I got Gallows Rock and Falrath’s Tooth mixed up. Apologies, I didn’t mean to confuse.
OHHH, I see, sorry - I wasn’t understanding what you were referring to originally. So… wait, is
“Retrieval” somehow required to complete the following main Companions quest, “Blood’s Honor?” I thought all the radiant quests were optional. (I guess I’m not understanding how you’re ‘stuck’ and can’t complete the Companions questline and remove the ‘state’ you’re in.)

I got that quest again on my latest playthrough, which bothered me a bit because I had made it a point to murder those two guys on my way to Whiterun when I saw them hassling a woman. I paid the fine and everything, but they came back from the dead to give me a quest.
Oh wow. How bizarre! Were they at least partially-decomposed zombies that interspersed quest dialog with requests for BRAAAAAINNNS or anything? :)
I still haven’t done that quest, in large part because they interrupted my awesome moment with the Graybeards. Grudges: I hold them.
I suppose it’s still possible that I can get another quest. I’ll have to give that a try by going to Whiterun. But I think the wiki says I have to complete two tasks for the Huntress, and this happens to be one of the ones she assigned to me. If I can go on without completing it, that would be awesome.
I do wish you could abandon quests. I ran into a bunch that I didn’t want to do because my character is a goody-two-shoes, but no, instead they’re just sitting there clogging up the quest list forever.
Sounds like awesome death metal lyrics
"I’m back from the DEAD/To give you a QUEST – "
Ahhh, yeah I remember that part, now. Hopefully you can just do a different radiant quest and move on. If not - and assuming you’re on PC - you may be able to use console commands to mark the quest as ‘finished’ so you can move on in the Companions questline. (See http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Retrieval for info about the console commands.)
Uh, I had this problem too. If it is the same issue then there is a door which is very easy to miss on the outside of one of the elevated walls of the fortress. The item you need is in the top tower outside and basically there is a door to the wall where you can’t reach. Follow the wall along and you should find it ok. (You don’t need to actually go inside the dungeon.) I missed it a dozen times.
You didn’t murder the guys who gave you the quest. There’s a random encounter that happens if that quest hasn’t been finished where you see two Redguards harass a woman. They are separate from the two in Whiterun that get kicked out by the guards. They look similar, dressed up in the Al’akir (or whatever) robes.
It happened for me on the road to Rorikstead.
I’ve discovered some quests where the quest indicator is over a structure that has no obvious entrance. These have tunnels or connections from nearby structures. [edit] Realized this isn’t your issue [/edit]
Thanks so much. Once I knew it was there, I went back and started searching. The first thing I had to do was to take down the three archers that could insta-kill me with one shot, and the warrior who was protecting them. Basically I did hit and run tactics and kept running away until I had one of them isolated. Then I killed that one archer. When the warrior and another archer came to help, I hid again, but those kept searching for me. It was nerve-wracking, but they eventually separated enough that I took out the second archer, and then without the snipers the warrior wasn’t a big deal. Took him out with some dual fire-bolt action. The last sniper was easy to take out without any backup. I knew there was one other warrior searching the grounds nearby, but I ignored him and searched the area you talked about.
I went up and down the wall, searching, searching, searching for another door. And finally I found one! Woohoo! It had an expert lock on it though, so I had to use most of my lockpicks to get through it. Then I found a series of wooden steps leading up to the top where I found the fragment I was looking for.
Once I got to the top, there was a bunch of loot I wanted to pick up, but Lydia was nowhere to be found. I looked down from the top of the castle and there she was! She was with the last warrior that I couldn’t find earlier, trying to get up, but every time she got up, he’d hit her and keep her down. So I readied my bow and shot him about a dozen times, each time with 3x Sneak damage. Heheh. Poor fellow never knew how or why he was dying.
And so, there was no bug after all. I’m glad. Though that castle design was really weird. I never would have found that hidden door if I hadn’t known it was there thanks to your post.
No, no, that was pretty much it, kind of. I suspected as much earlier, but since I couldn’t kill the snipers in the area, every time I searched before, it was always less than a fully thorough search I guess. Lesson learned. Next time, always clear the area of enemies before searching, even if the enemies are really, really badass.

Stuff about available followers!
I just picked up Mjoll as a follower and… oh man. She is pure awesome. She is the Fawkes of Skyrim, a gung-ho mountain of majestic mighty murder. I mean, seriously, between Lydia’s bored/sarcastic “I am sworn to carry your burdens…” (I am trying to give you better armor and weapons you ungrateful cur) and Mjoll’s “I CAN CARRY LOTSA THINGS GRAURRR” I mean, it’s just no contest. And Mjoll is just itching for a fight all the time, and that goads me on… I’ve been all thieving and sneaking about; with Mjoll beside me, it’s time to go kick ass. And the way she swings around the warhammer I made her, we pretty much do.
Lydia can be my housecarl (and STAY in that house). Some other girl is my housewife (aka “money and home-cooked meal vending machine”), but the one I’m spending all my time with is Mjoll. I am totally finishing the game with her.
stuff about who is marriageable and follower-able
I know, but she doesn’t give me money or food that way. I don’t want to marry her, anyway; I want to go kill things with her. Like Mal and Zoe.
Yeah, I may end up marrying her just because she is so awesome. You do have to be careful; I was being really cautious in an area, with a lot of stronger bandits and mages in the rocks, attacking, and I turned around, and she was gone. Crap. Anyway, killed a couple and some archer was giving me a hard time, and suddenly she comes up behind him and takes off his head! The fighting stops, and I walk with her down into the area entering the fort ahead, and the ground is strewn with bodies of bad guys she has taken out. Awesome. She can totally be my game wife, and we can wander the world of Skyrim, being awesome together. She even puts up with my thievery. ;)
