So how do I download the Hi Res DLC? I don’t see it listed under the DLC tab in Properties, and the size of the local files for Skyrim shows 5740 MB. Do I have to launch the game first, then check the box?
It’s a separate item in the Steam store.
Ah, I see. Thanks. Hope the servers aren’t too slammed for me to get it today.

Todd Howard said they have multi millions in PC sales and the average playtime on the PC is 75 hours. Woah.

By the way, I did get around to uploading the destruction damage scaling.

Just in case anyone wants to see if it causes their game to melt down or become incredibly overpowered.

I was close to starting a new thread for this, because damn… This is some epic stuff.
From RPS:
500 Draugr, 200 skeletons, 500 Dwarven Warriors, and a dragon all lined up to beat the undead hell out of each other, for a movie that’ll go down in history as The Great Battle of Skyrim. It’s well-shot, nicely edited, and has lots and lots of kapwow. Video herein.
Have fun with epic movie!!
Minor spoiler in the video above: you might not have seen that particular “dragon” if you didn’t do the Mages Guild (and possibly others).
Anyway, yeah that was pretty good. He needs the texture pack, and the animations don’t quite hold up to machinima, but you gotta love 20 simultaneous Fus-Ro-Dahs. It got my imagination working.
Those dwarven warriors never appeared in the game, did they? I figured that and the two main characters were just armored humans.
Speaking of the DICE keynote, here’s the other Skyrim video I saw at RPS today:
They gave developers a free week to implement anything they wanted into the game. There are spears, magic combos, new river effects, werebears, and giant mudcrabs. Some of that stuff is awesome. I’d be flabbergasted if they’re not planning to release all of it as DLC or mods. Otherwise it would be monumentally stupid to show us what we can’t have.
If they miscalculated the effect this would have, maybe the massive community reaction they’re sure to see will change their minds.
Tim, that’s awesome stuff. I don’t know if I’d really want much of it in my game but -
…Thief-style water arrows…

Seriously - That internal video was full of god-damn awesome, pardon my french. Oh, and I laughed a lot at the end! :-D
Holy fuck that was all incredibly sick.
One of the RPS comments raises the question why Bethesda couldn’t have thrown more exciting things like this into the original game. It’s a fair point, but it seems like they’re going for a more reduced approach instead of the kitchen sink approach. I don’t mind that. But I do want all of that stuff released now.
They could shove it all into an expansion pack, charge $20, and make tens of millions of dollars. My biggest irrational fear is that it’s some sort of joke video. Or maybe it’s extremely early prototype stuff that would take too long to flesh out.
I’m going to be really upset if:
-epic mounts and dragon mounts
-spears
-giant mudcrab
-magic combos
-new runes (hell yes paralysis rune, they need to add more magical traps with various effects)
don’t make it into the game.
The assassin vision thing was pretty cool too, I think there definitely should be an illusion spell that let’s you project an astral presence with no-clip to scout out an area quickly and without revealing yourself.
Magic and Ranged kill shots need to be in game. It’s astounding that they aren’t already. That should be free DLC if they can make it happen.
The giant mudcrab was awesome. I wouldn’t mind seeing a handful of “boss” enemies like this related to specific quests and locations. The dragons are nice, but they get old after awhile.
Some of of the lighting and animation effects were amazing. Love to see those implemented down the road, maybe as part of an expansion to freshen the whole game. Spears were also cool looking, and Vampire and Lycanthrope skill trees would be neat in an expansion as well.
Overall a ton of fun stuff in there I’d like to see added to the game at some point.
Vampire and Lycanthrope perk trees were cool but I think they should be separate from the level-up perk system. Like, have a separate Vampire and Werebeast level system where you have to maul people or suck blood or do monster things to gain experience and then spend those perks on stuff in those trees.
I was actually pretty shocked this wasn’t in the game already. Fallout 3/NV has it, so why not Skyrim?
Yeah, that is pretty incredible stuff, especially considering they only worked on it for a week. I even like the Kinect Shout idea. As it is, I always forget to use shouts during a battle. It would be cool if I could Fus-Doh-Rah out loud instead of pausing, going into submenus, changing a shout, backing out, and then pressing a button.
As to why stuff like that isn’t already in the game, he addressed that in his talk as well, I think: Gamasutra writeup on his talk.
There are specific rules that Bethesda follows to create an environment conducive to making good video games. One rule is to “define the experience” of the game.
“Don’t define your game by a list of features,” said Howard. “Define it by the experience you want the gamer to have.” Often, definitions are difficult to put into words. Explaining the feel of the fantasy-themed Skyrim might involve pointing to concept art of a dragon coming over the horizon, bellowing with such force that the armored warriors surrounding it are blown backwards.
The feeling might even be conveyed by a Conan the Barbarian figurine, with its dual-wielded weapons and viking-like armor. While that “feel” might be vague to outsiders, the Skyrim team was apparently on the same page throughout the course of development.
Howard reminded game makers to “keep it simple.” “We can do anything, we just can’t do everything. You have to pick your battles,” he said. In a game like Skyrim that encourages freeform play, it’d be easy for the development team to get carried away, and try to include many superfluous features. But instead, Bethesda focused on the core experience.
(Emphasis mine).
Yeah that’s what I figured. But DLC and mods are a good opportunity to throw the kitchen sink in there.
I’m not getting my hopes up too much yet. Correct me if I’m wrong, but did we ever see any cool extra features like that in Oblivion? Maybe the mod packs I used didn’t bother with gameplay stuff like that.

The sizzle video is awesome, but I’m sure most of those features are incredibly broken. Prototypes go fast, but finished features take a lot more time. I would love to see some of this ingame though!
When do you finish the game?
I would have assumed after:
:
which I just did. Does the game have an ending? with rolling credits?
I have also completed the Civil War quest. I took the side of the Stormcloacks.
