Smallville: The Series - worth it?

Man, I wish To Catch a Predator hadn’t been canceled. I LOVED that show.

Based on the lack of activity in all of the Smallville threads my search turned up, I’m assuming no one is watching this anymore. I thought this season was decent, though not spectacular by any means. I really hated the guy they got to play Zod. All he does is whine all the time. Every thing he says sounds exactly the same and every episode has him invading someone’s personal space and talking in a low, menacing baby voice. He’s awful. Tess Mercer is only a little better, but honestly I think it’s the writing that lets her down, not the acting. The episodes that concentrated on Lois and Clark were really good this season and the one where they went away for the weekend was genuinely funny. Erica Durance continues to be the best Lois Lane I’ve seen, right up there with Teri Hatcher’s portrayal.

I watched the season finale last night and enjoyed it. I must admit wanting to squeal a bit when I saw the glimpse of the future in Clark’s dream as well as the reflection of his red and yellow symbol in his eye when he opened the package from his mom. I really hope that they ditch the Blur stuff next season and bring Clark in as Superman. Seeing his initial struggles with a public dual identity would be awesome and I think the show is far enough along that he has to finally step into the red boots.

My daughter and I are approaching the end of Season 5. The prior seasons seemed to have a proportionately (albeit marginally) greater number of strong episodes than this season, I think, but we’re hanging in there and got rewarded last night with Mercy (S05E19).

I hadn’t intended to, but it was all alone on the friday night wasteland, so I auto-recorded it and eventually got around to watching it.

He struggles to get his lines out in intelligible English - it is so laborious a delivery that it is painful.

The actress is okay, not sure about the part itself.

This is the reason that I’ve watched this season - these episodes have actually been fun, well-written and played. Durance’s Lois is so much better than Kreuk’s Lang, both in the writing and the acting.

Pretty much by definition that’s the end of show - not to mention the way the show has been written, virtually everyone would be able to put two and two together and connect Clark to Superman regardless of how thick the glasses were. The suit hints that his final destiny (and series end) is close at hand (at least conceptually, they can always drag it out a few years real time).

I’m wondering if DC/Warner would even let them have Clark become Superman full time in Season 10. It’s the next natural step after 9 years of screwing around not being Superman, ya know? The flash forward purported to show 2013, so we know (as we’ve always known I suppose) that Clark marries Lois and becomes Superman. I just wish they’d give us a full season with Welling in the suit. I think 9 years is a long enough lead up to it.

Also, I appreciate the reply. I have no one to talk Smallville with other than my fiance’.

I can’t wait for it to end. I’ve been dragging myself through the sludge of this show for years now, occasionally entertained every fifth show. Every show is practically a reset from the one previously. Why do I keep watching? The same reason I watch Sat night live: in the hopes that there is a redeeming episode every now and then, but most of the time, it’s on in the background while I surf the net.

Here’s what I hate:

Chloe and her ridiculous hacking skills/watchtower. Is that run by the Jehovah Witnesses too? Throw her out and get the real Chloe from ‘24’.

  • The lame ‘extra heroes’.
  • The constant Vancouver ‘skytrain’ shots every time they have an outdoor scene.

I’m always happy when characters die, as they have all overstayed their welcome: Lex, his father, Jimmy Olsen, Lana Lang, Daddy Kent. (who went off to be porn star in ‘nip tuck’)

I liked the mother (Anette O’Toole) and it was good to see her again in the final show. (Geez, I still remember her from watching ‘Cat people’ in 1982)

Now Lois, the last remaining clueless cast member, actually knows who the blur is, instead of just passing out every time Clark saves her. Progress!

This show could easily be condensed into two seasons of ‘good shows’ and interesting ‘Superman’ related mythology.

Has anyone noticed all the fake sounding names of the cast members?

Cassidy Freeman (I hate this woman. I was happy to see her get burned in the face.)
Justin Hartley (green arrow)

and worst of all:

Callum Blue (Zod) This guy should have been banished to another dimension just for having such a fucking stupid and pretentious REAL NAME. Does he also work as a porn star? Maybe he should also guest on ‘nip tuck’ with daddy Kent. (John Schneider)

It’s not a question of DC/Warner, it was one of the parameters that the original producers insisted on (no suit). They felt it counter to what the concept of the show was: the time before Clark Kent openly declared as Superman and his growth to become that legend. There are new producers, but Welling accepted the role under that condition, so the suit probably remains as the final punctuation point.

I wasn’t happy when any of these characters “died”. Lana never died and neither did Lex, by the way.

Callum Blue sucks. Totally. But it’s his acting that’s awful. It’s weird to condemn the guy for having a stupid name.

I remember Gough/Millar’s “no flights, no tights” mantra very well. No flights went out the window quite awhile ago, albeit through bizarre contrivances and allowing EVERYONE ELSE to fly except for Clark. Even Hawkman fucking flies! As for the “no tights” portion, Welling took a half step toward wearing the Superman suit this season with that ridiculous Neo Superman getup. Why not just go all the way next season and wrap the series up with a full year of him as a young Superman? For all intents and purposes Clark already was Superman in Season 9, just not in a very public way.

Honestly, the “no flights, no tights” mantra has got to fucking go. It’s just ridiculous at this point. Completely understandable through high school years, but c’mon. It’s time for Clark to become Superman.

As much as I think he sucks in Smallville, I have no problem with him at all in Dead Like Me. He just tries too hard or the writing just plain confuses him in Smallville.

Because that’s the point where the series ends pretty much by definition. The journey is complete. Any other ending would be anti-climactic.

Yes, I hated Callum Blue BEFORE I knew what his name was. Knowing his name makes me hate him even more.

I’m amazed that Clark never landed a haymaker on Lois with her constant ‘Hey, Smallville!’ through the last five years. The TV needs to have a nintendo ‘smack’ stick so viewers at home can make amends.

Lex did die, about a year after he had already quit the show.

They think he’s dead, but he’s not. Lois is shown reading a paper in 2013 stating Lex is running for president.

The show’s been counter to its original idea for a long, long time. I’m just glad that the mainline DCU has stopped attempting to incorporate stuff from Smallville into Superman’s background. At this point most of Smallville makes fuckall sense when merged with the rest of the DCU.

I still watch, but after season 6 it went downhill , I hope that this next season is its last.

Exactly. I’ve just taken the last season or two as a substitute for Superman’s very early years in Metropolis. Instead of revealing himself in the suit right away, he skulked around in a black duster, saving people and being known only as The Blur. I don’t think there’s any good reason to not evolve the show into Superman for this (presumably) last season.

So season 10 has started, and it’s the final season. Looks like Lex might be making a return, and a whole new super dark evil coming your way (I’ve not read much of the comics so some I’m not sure who the shadow evil dude at the end was supposed to be).

I’m guessing he’s going to be able to fly partway through this at least, as he had already mentioned in this first episode that he felt like he was flying. Again he has to prove to Jor-El that he can be Earths hero yadda yadda.

I wasn’t all that impressed with the opener, but it’s the last season of the show so I’ll be toughing it out and hoping it’ll improve.

I’m kind of curious what group it was that captured the Green Arrow and wanted Chloe in exchange.

Darkseid is who I heard the villain of the final season is.

Wooo the final season! I loved seasons 1-6, 7-8-9 were not as good but very watchable, I am glad its almost over… for the most part its been a fun ride.
