On the one hand, if this were the D.C. of the 18th century, Gorka would have just lost so much face by ducking out of a challenge, his giant head would be a sack of potatoes.
On the other hand, can’t calling someone to duel nowadays legally be considered fighting words? I disagree with the writer’s contention that dueling should be reintroduced to society. It’s like he namedropped Hamilton but didn’t listen to it.

Only a delusional idiot with secret fantasies of regaining their lost virility would call for dueling to be reintroduced. It was not the hallmark of a civil society; it was a way for evil, bullying monsters to spread fear through violence.

No. Almost nothing can be considered fighting words.
If he was standing in the street with a gun and yelled at Gorka to grab steel or die like a dog… maybe.
You skin that smokewagon and we’ll see what happens!
Look at all this economic anxiety up in here.

Yep – these people are just straight-up racists. The Democrats should just forget they exist. You can’t change their minds, so don’t waste a moment or a dollar on trying.
From the article:
“Everybody I talk to,” he said, “realizes it’s not Trump who’s dragging his feet. Trump’s probably the most diligent, hardest-working president we’ve ever had in our lifetimes. It’s not like he sleeps in till noon and goes golfing every weekend, like the last president did.”
There is your diehard DJT voter. Nothing matters, and their vote counts as much as anyone else’s.
Yeah, I read some of that earlier today, and it’s really discouraging how all that matters to these people is that Trump pisses off/horrifies people that they don’t like.
That article, and ones like it, are why I’m not as over-the-moon confident about a voter rebuttal of Trump in 2018 or 2020 despite the results of last night’s elections.

My heart breaks into a million pieces every time I read articles like that. I wasn’t born here but gaining citizenship was one of the proudest days of my life. I love America so much for the many opportunities it has given my family to thrive. I wish my country loved me as much as I love it.
I don’t see the two as having much to do with one another. I mean it’s not like we’re going to cure racism, these people will always be out there. We just let them have a bigger voice than they really should have.
I don’t really think the results of 2018 or 2020 are going to rest on convincing racists to move parties. It’s about who can turn out their base and who can convince their leaners to show up.
Trump won in 2016 because a lot of Dems and Dem-adjacent voters failed to show, and then because he charged up a large number of low-propensity voters (aka racists) to come out and vote. Can he do it again? I’m inclined towards “no”, but we’ll see.

I’d be willing to bet that Trump won’t run again. I don’t think he likes being president. It’s not as much fun as he thought. Pense is the more likely candidate.
Your last sentence is exactly the problem for me. I’m never again going to assume that basic human decency and logic will overcome bigotry, stupidity, and pettiness.
I guess that’s one approach. From my perspective, we got lazy. I really didn’t think Trump would get elected. I mean, I still voted anyway, but I imagine lots of folks figured, I don’t like Clinton but she’s going to win anyway, so what’s the point?
He’ll need an excuse like accomplishing everything he set out to do, as he’s not going to want to be seen as quitting or losing. If he can paint not running as a victory he’ll do it.

I don’t know, I also am convinced that he thought being President would be alot easier and more fun than it is (I believe he actually said as much in an interview or two earlier in the year), but there’s two reasons that make me think the chance of running for re-election is high:
- He loves campaigning
- If he doesn’t get elected again people will stop paying attention to him
