“We support regulations. In fact, we support them so much we wrote some up to save you all some time. You should make them law.”
Facebook engineers knowingly and purposely tweaked the algorithm to throttle progressive news organizations. The sign-off came from Zuck himself.

Is there a way to read that article not paywalled?

Looks like Facebook wants to give white people a new platform they can use to issue BOLOs for dark-skinned people walking around their neighborhoods.
BOLO = be on the lookout?

I am disappointed in you Qt3
All 4 of those pictures posted look like entities that don’t belong in a White gated community in Florida so I am taking to NextDoor right now to send a BOLO post to warn everyone. Expect Boomers in MAGA hats to start patrolling on golf carts any moment.

Company under intense congressional scrutiny over its impact on the political landscape takes steps to prevent independent researchers from exploring their potential to impact the political landscape.
How dumb can the people at Facebook be? It’s like they’re begging for congressional action against them.

How on Earth can a cease and desist be utilized in this manner? That seems like out-right inflammatory intimidation.
It’s a little unclear how the tool works, but my impression is that it is a screen-scraper/DOM tool that will crawl through a user’s Facebook page to see what types of things are collecting data and what is being collected. NYU has provided the tool to their researchers/volunteers, and they’ve installed it as a browser plug-in.
Facebook is a tool with no licensing fee, but when you sign up you still have to agree to the Terms of Service (ToS). No one reads that because it is over 14,000 words… but they still technically agree to it when they create their account. In fact I think they have you re-agree to it every once in a while. And buried in that ToS somewhere is some clause or another that disallows the use of tools like this plug-in without their stated permission.
So Facebook is probably well within their rights to ban accounts using this tool. They have chosen the slightly-less-severe route of “asking” NYU to discontinue instead.
It’s still a terrible look, of course.

Facebook can pretty much ban you for whatever they want.
