I don’t agree with Alexey here, but anyone with his courage deserves to have their voice heard.
Social media does a lot wrong, so if they happened to do something right here, they did it for the wrong reasons? If twitter will not ban Putin, then you can’t ban Trump?
That’s certainly an opinion.
If the reason Trump was banned was because the American employees exerted pressure and were afraid of the national damage, then it’s a problem. Because twitter doesn’t have a critical mass of employees in Russia, Turkey, Haiti, Zimbabwe, etc., to look out for their national interests.

I’m cool with them banning Putin.
James Woods was whining about losing a lot of followers too.

Hey, guys, I just checked and I’m proud to announce that I have not lost any Twitter followers during this great purge.
DJT is such a millennial, he doesn’t know how to talk to anyone without his smartphone, and he values himself based on how many followers and Likes he gets.

I might have, but I blocked them already so I would never know.
I gained one follower since the purge. I now have a total of 1 followers!
Am I doing social media wrong?

I’m curious if the Twitter ban and the like on others just means Trump cannot directly or indirectly message, or if any media associated with him is banned.
For example, if Trump figures out that he can do press conferences in lieu of tweeting on the shitter, can people tweet the presser?

People could Tweet a Press Conference from the President. It’s an official government declaration and news at the end of the day.
You can’t let the President use your account to send out messages though.
I think he made a few points that are valid.
- Don’t tell me he was banned for violating Twitter rules. I get death threats here every day for many years, and Twitter doesn’t ban anyone (not that I ask for it).
- Of course, Twitter is a private company, but we have seen many examples in Russian and China of such private companies becoming the state’s best friends and the enablers when it comes to censorship.
- If @twitter @jack.want to do things right, they need to create some sort of a committee that can make such decisions. We need to know the names of the members of this committee, understand how it works, how its members vote and how we can appeal against their decisions.
The reason for the ban seem rather arbitrary if we go strictly by Twitter’s TOS, Trump, Putin, and many others should have been banned long ago.
Now I support the ban in large part because Twitter is a private company and they get to decide who is on their platform. That being said, even though I’m one of the biggest defenders of big tech on the forum, I recognize that differences between Putin’s relationship with the oligarchs, and the relationships between American politicians and the CEO Fortune 500 companies aren’t as different as we’d like to believe.
Now Twitter, ain’t Facebook or Google and being on Twitter hardly silences Donald Trump, even as private citizen, much less as POTUS…
But when we start talking about reigning in big tech, demanding some level of transparency and consistent and things like banning political leaders or even popular figures, seems like a good starting point.
None of this makes banning Trump from twitter unacceptable or censorship to me.
What social media needs to do is up their game and ban a shit ton more people, not unban Trump.
Me either, banning Trump is long overdue.
I don’t know about banning more folks though, I’d like them to be more consistent. For instance, your random girl with OnlyFans account post a picture with nudity on Instagram, she gets permabanned. The same amount of nudity from B list celebrity no problem. The treatment is different in this case isn’t really because of nudity, it is because the celebrity generates more revenue for IG than the OnlyFan girl. I also suspect that politics enters into a lot of decisions. The twitter/FB/YouTube employee who makes the banning decision is influenced by their own politics. I can’t divorce my hatred of Trump from my happiness that he got his Twitter toy taken away.
If we are being honest this there is a slippery slope argument with any of these bans, and if you want to see what the bottom of the hill looks like, Alexey Navalny is the poster boy.
Kirstie making excellent points here.

We should just start handing out stickers every time someone tries to equate slavery to whatever thing upsets them today.
Yeah there is no issue here. That man is not silenced. Hell he could try start his own soon to be failed newspaper for all I care. He can get his own app up but no one is required to support it. Hell maybe he should just start making his own phones with his own shitty OS while he’s at it. He can talk to China about manufacturing. They love him.
