It’s not a platform, it’s a messaging app like Skype. Surely you can’t expect Microsoft to moderate Skype? Especially since Telegram messages are end-to-end encrypted.

It looks like Telegram groups would be the most straight forward way to disseminate bullshit. You can have group sizes of 200,000 people, which is pretty big for say “michigan patriots”. One could imagine content moderation in those large groups, similar to what facebook does.

Telegram is the go-to alternative to Whatsapp over here along with Signal. But yeah, it’s also the platform that our resident conspiracy numbnuts and covidiots flocked to after some of their prominent members left or got banned on the likes of Twitter and Youtube last year.

If I’m reading this correctly, the bulk of the user explosion for Telegram is NOT from the USA.

The bulk of the new users are coming from Asia (38%), Europe (27%), and Latin America (21%), with around 8% signing up from the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa).
