Some Holiday Music cheer for y'all

Since a few folks seemed to dig the holiday mix I posted last year, I figured it’d be OK to unfurl the 2007 Christmas Music Mix here as well. I do a CD every year to spice up my Christmas Cards (sure beats xeroxing one of those form letters!), and for the last few years or so, I’ve popped 'em up on my very occasionally updated blog.

As usual, this is a pretty sectarian mix of songs, since I send holiday cards out to friends of a variety of faiths and creeds. Don’t blame me for no “Adeste Fidelis” or “Away In A Manger”, ok? Also as usual, the link here is to the full mondo-biggo mp3 with the whole thing stitched together into one large mp3 with the tracks crossfaded into one another and normalized for sound volume. Due to some popular demand, I’ll actually make the individual songs available on my blogspace soon and leave them up until Christmas, but I won’t linkum here.

Mix is here.

Awesome

The only* Christmas song is Darlene Love, “It’s Christmas, Baby, Please Come Home”. Performed live on Dave Letterman’s show. Every year.

 • hyperbole

Speaking of Darlene Love: Christmastime For The Jews

With the ancient traditional lyrics:
You’re a bum
You’re a punk
You’re an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy christmas your arse
I pray God its our last
Woohoo! Merry Christmas!

While we’re at it, clearly no Christmas music list is complete without Twisted Sister covering Oh Come All Ye Faithful, which proves without a shadow of a doubt that what that song was missing all along was the guitar solo to “We’re Not Going To Take It”.

Also, my favourite Christmas song that isn’t by the Pogues: The Ramones Merry Christmas Baby, I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight.

along with twisted sister’s come all ye faithful, i like:

Awesome. I still have last year’s and it was a big hit during our holiday drive. I was hoping you’d do it again.

Still the greatest: Christmas in Hollis

That was my post… I’m pretty sure I posted the same part of the lyrics in this thread last year ;-)

Anyway, as stated in previous threads I love musical covers and am especially fond of christmas covers. A few of the songs are on my christmas playlist too - but there’s a bunch of stuff I don’y know, so thanks for posting.

My favourites lean a bit towards the macabre, with a mix of classics and really smarmy…

Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa - De La Soul (ot The Roots’ cover)
The Junkies Christmas - Williams S. Burroughs & Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy
'Twas the Night Before Christmas - Henry Rollins
Red Water (Christmas Mourning) - Type O Negative
A Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minniapolis - Tom Waits
Ave Maria - Chris Cornell
Christmas Is - Run DMC (it’s bad but the chorus makes me giggle)
Oi to the world - No Doubt
Little Drummachine Boy - Beck
Santa Doesn’t Cop Out on Dope - Sonic Youth
Merry Fucking Christmas - South Park
Fairytale of New York - The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl
Merry Christmas Baby - Southern Culture On the Skids
Leise Rieselt Der Schnee - The X-mas Project II
12 Days of Christmas - The Yobs
David Bowie & Bing Crosby - Little Drummer Boy
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - U2
The Christmas Song - Mel Tome
Christmas Is All Around - Billy Mack (Bill Nighy)
Winter Wonderland - Macy Gray
Winter Wonderland - Eurythmics
And a handful of Danish tunes, you wouldn’t understand…

Okay, slight rant:

Ave Maria is not a X-mas tune.

Chris Cornell destroyed that song, and not in a good way. It’s actually PAINFUL to listen to, and I like Audioslave and Soundgarden.

My Christmas listening starts and ends with the Twisted Sister Christmas album.

Dude, you have Clay Aiken on your list. Were there no Rick Astley Christmas tunes for you this year?

Of course it is.
People listen to it at christmas, which makes it a christmas song nevermind what it was originally supposed to be. And I’m stunned that’s the one song on my list, that you find least christmassy…

Shadarr, check out the X-mas Project II compilation I linked. Most songs are in german, but it’s a lot of metal bands together and it’s noisy.

I ran out of preemptory challenges shortly before that one came up, and my girlfriend was able to place that one on the playlist.

Anyways, Hanzii, explain to me why, of all the versions of Ave Maria out there, you chose that one. It’s probably the worst thing Chris Cornell has ever done. Evar.
