Yeah. I’m not crazy about Pandemic, but maybe Legacy would “Jazz” it up enough.
Wait Dead winter is out in retail? Interesting. Also is there anyone here who does not like this game. I was not impressed with my first game.
The new Days of Wonder game, Five Tribes, is out and it’s the first one in awhile to get really stellar reviews, seems like. Anyone given it a try? I already spent my gaming budget this month; by the time next month rolls around my guess is the first print run will be gone.
The designer, Bruno Cathala, describes it as a “worker displacement” game.

Different strokes for different folks. I liked it, but I can see where it might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
I haven’t played it but am pretty excited to. It looks neat. The central mechanic looks a lot like Mancala. Sort of like Trajan, but the Mancala board is in the center shared by everyone, and you can drop in all four directions rather than just clockwise. Similar to Trajan, you activate the square you land on and the color of the “stones” (meeples in this case) are important based on where you land.
Radho has a good runthrough on it that describes it well. He didn’t think it was a good two-player game and was uncomfortable with some aspects of the theme (one of the central goals is to purchase slaves so you can sacrifice them to gain various Djinn’s favor for permanent special abilities). It’s good to know it doesn’t work 2-player, but I don’t think the darker theme would bother me and the gameplay sounds too interesting to miss.

I haven’t played it, but I thought from Rahdo’s run through that Five Tribes looked really interesting, even though I’m not a huge fan of auction mechanics (which is used to determine player order). Unfortunately I don’t have much need for games which don’t play well 2-player, so I won’t be picking it up unless I get a chance to play it, love it, and there’s a way to tweak 2-player to be better.
It feels like a throwback to early euros so I’m sure that’s part of the hype. I’d like to try but based on the video play through, I’ll pass on a purchase.
Side Note: Among the stars is awesome. I kickstarted this earlier in the year and it arrived this week. Super easy to pick up and play. If you like drafting games like 7 Wonders but want a little more to think about get it. It’s actually on sale out Cardhaus right now.

I have played it with a couple of non gamers who wanted to try it because they are into zombies, and it went really smoothly. I don’t have any direct tips, I just explained the basic concepts in 15 minutes and nobody had any trouble with it, for what it’s worth. I love the game!
Anyone know of a good board gaming podcast?
The only one I listen to regularly (as regularly as it comes out) is the Shut Up & Sit Down podcast.
I’ve also listened to the State of Games podcast, which was okay.

I used to listen to Dice Tower until Tom Vassal got on my nerves. Its very professionally produced though. Also, BGG seems to have lots of podcasts listed, but I’ve no idea if any are good.
Thanks Nightgaunt for your two suggestions, I will check them out.
If you’re not familiar with Shut Up & Sit Down, it’s the videos you really need to check out! The podcast is less focused, but still enjoyable.
D6 Generation is my favorite gaming podcast. A close second is The Secret Cabal. Both are excellent and cover a wide range of boardgame, tabletop and RPG content. The latest episodes are live from GenCon and are not the best, but I would definitely suggest checking them both out once they are back to regular episodes.
I also second the recommendation for Shut up and Sit Down videos. The SU&SD podcast is ok too, but the video stuff they do is great.
I also like the Dice Tower, but these other shows are a bit better (and don’t feature Mr. Vasel if he grates on you).

The only boardgaming podcast I listen to other than SU&SD’s podcast and the intermittent boardgame coverage on the Qt3 Games podcast is Flip the Table, which is a podcast about reviewing terrible, old and obscure boardgames, the sort of thing you often find really cheap in thrift stores. It’s usually pretty funny and they have a surprising amount of knowledge about the various random subjects that have been licensed for most of the games they review. They actually try to be as fair as possible to the games and look for anything that was enjoyable in them and how it could be tweaked to be better, but usually there’s not much there to rescue. They have run into a tiny handful of games they actually liked enough to bring out at cons and such, though.
I like The Long View, particularly when a game I like is being discussed, or he has a guest on who I enjoy.
Thanks guys, will check them out.
Agreed on Flip the Table. Not so much about “gaming news” and reviews, but a super fun look at some moldy oldies. :)
I had totally dismissed this Feld game, but I am now extremely interested in seeing more from Aquasphere.
What turned you around on it? I still don’t get the theme at all, but watching some of the playthroughs has made me realize I’ll like the game anyway (but too late to do the Kickstarter).

So I bought a new copy of Space Hulk (at the GW store). The first time I was ever in a GW… wow, looks like they do a lot of miniature games ;)
Actually, my experience with SH is only by playing Claustrophobia and the PC port of SH… Since it was OOP for so many years, I had to get a copy
I know SH is a classic, but the PC port didn’t win me over (playing online with a friend). I have the feeling it might be better to play over the board
He won me over (RPS)
Interesstingly, Spartacus was his Nr. 1 game…
