Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection

I must be a sucker for these collections considering I own both the sonic collection and the sega genesis collection on the Ps2. Anyway a new one is schedule to come out in two days for the PS3 and 360 for $30, and I’m tempted to get it just for Dynamite Headdy, Streets of Rage series, and Beyond Oasis. Now they just need to get Rocket Night Adventures, Land Stalker and Sonic CD in one of these and I’ll be set. Anyone planning on getting this?

Its certainly tempting. There are a lot of good old games on there. Do you know what the price will be Jab?

Holy wow, Kid Chameleon and Comix Zone both? Those two probably justify this purchase even if you’ve already played the Sonic games to death and bought Ecco and Golden Axe on XBLA, as I have. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll probably grab this.

I pre-ordered this last week. I grew up in a SNES household so I missed out on the vast majority of these games. I’ve never played a Phantasy Star, or more than a few minutes of the first Sonic game. Looking forward to seeing what I missed. Honestly, having the arcade version of Space Harrier is worth the 29.99 to me.

It’s a great collection, and the first time all four Phantasy Stars have been collected in one place in the US. My only real question is where the hell Revenge of Shinobi is.

Yeah, but the only one still worth playing is the fourth. The second is a horrid, horrid grindfest, the third is just a bad game outright. I’ll admit I have never played the first one, though.

Definitely wait and see on the emulation just to be sure. Many times these collections aren’t the greatest because the game emulation is a hack job.

HOLY SHIT SHINING IN THE DARKNESS!!!1

The first one was actually my favorite though it had some brutal pseudo 3d dungeons. I remember spending hours mapping them out on paper. I actually finished 1-3 though for some reason I never did finish 4 (though I think I got pretty far).

I remember these cartridges were crazy expensive. I want to say they were around $80 or so.

The original Phantasy Star was like $70 or $80 and PSIV was around $80. That’s from memory… trying to find links to back that up.

OK, I knew it was more than that… Phantasy Star IV was $99.99 according to one GAF post from just recently when this EGM article surfaced… That sounds right. I was working at EB at the time it came out and it was just outrageously priced.

As for most of this collection (all of it?), you can play it all on Gametap right now. Just FYI.

Also, according to the GAF thread, SEGA fucked up and you can’t do the Lock-On stuff with the Sonic games and Sonic & Knuckles.

That’s the kind of stuff that these collections inevitably screw up badly.

Official Thread at GAF…

Yeah, but it’s worth thirty bucks to have all of these to play on a TV (versus on a PC) in perpetuity, especially for those of us who don’t subscribe to Gametap already, I reckon.

Aww man. That’ll be the only reason I’ll get the Sonic and Knuckles plus Sonic 3 set. I don’t care much for 2, but the full game of 3 and Knuckles was one of the best platformers I had the fortune to play in my early days.

I too wish Rocket Knight Adventures was on there, as well as Quackshot, Revenge of the Shinobi, Afterburner and the Thunderforce series on there and I would have bought it in a heartbeat. Now I’ll simply just think about it.

Agree about Sonic 3 and knuckles, I believe it works on the Sonic collection for the PS2, but its been awhile since I’ve played it. Is quackshot the game with donald duck as an explorer? That one along with the Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck co-op game would be awesome to play.

edit: Does anyone know how well the games handle on the 360 controller using the analog stick?

Yep

You speak absolute blasphemy, sir. Except about the third one. I never quite understood what was going through their heads on that one.

Agreed, but I imagine the licensing would be an absolute nightmare at this point if they wanted to re-release those games. Which is too bad, because Castle of Illusion was great.

As for Sonic & Knuckles, yeah, the lock-on doesn’t work, but anyone who actually cares about that already has Sonic Mega Collection on the Gamecube or PS2, in which it does work. If this collection sells well, SEGA is interested in doing more, so I’m forking over the cash in hopes of a Shinobi Collection.

Flicky? It has Flicky? SOLD!

In all seriousness, it’s a pretty awesome collection and I remember reading about it a while back. I somehow thought it wasn’t coming out for quite a bit longer, though. Amazon ordered!

Wow. All these classics. Converted to Hi-def. $27.99 = sold.

Hey wow, I wasn’t too interested (I already have the Genesis collection on PS2) but all the games are bumped up to 720p? I might have to buy it just to see that.

They display quite well in 720p and there are options for 4:3 and 16:9. There’s also a smoothing filter you can put on, but it makes everything look weird and sort of blurry/smeary.
