Sony drops $100 on the PS3

Note that there is also a “get 5 free Blu-Rays with purchase of any Blu-Ray Player” deal going on until Sept that you can add to this.

I’m sure we’ll hear the official announcement at E3.

It’s either this or death.

PS I bet Circuit City has a caveat allows them to exempt the PS3 from that Blu-ray deal.

Neither the pricedrop nor the 5 free Blu-ray disc deal is Circuit City specific, both are universal and should apply to each other.

Well this isn’t Sony as of yet but Circuit City doing a sale.

I don’t think $100 is going to be enough, honestly. They don’t have any games I want to play, and $500 is still a lot to most people.

Still too much.

But is that for the 20g version or the 60g version? Ebgames has the 20g version at $499 now.

Screen shot says “$100 price break”

What he said.

Word.

Not enough of a price drop.
Not enough games.
Not a good enough online service.

PS3. Not what I am going to be getting.

Too little, too late. A $200 price drop might have put them back in the running… maybe. If MS didn’t do a price drop of their own this year, which they almost certainly will. $100 is an empty gesture, though still probably more than Sony can afford.

I still think they’re still dead at $500, $400, $300, whatever. For me, I think the 360 has games now and more games I want in the future. With the Madden 2008 fps comparison, I think that there are more concrete doubts about Sony’s claim of hardware supremacy.

I don’t know what I’d do if I was Sony to regain market share. They’ve made an immensely complicated piece of hardware that they’re not going to make money on for years, publishers are bailing on their system for the 360 and the Wii, and Microsoft has paid off a number of big western developers for exclusives.

Has any console (or any commercial product) rebounded from such a slow beginning? I think the console wars are largely momentum and right now Sony doesn’t have any.

I wonder if the threatened eventual switch to the weaker-BC hardware is what will allow this price drop…

Compared to launch, this isn’t so much a price drop as it is adding extra hard drive space to the original $499 unit. Which is, y’know, nice and all, but not exactly the world’s biggest deal.

If they had the 20GB unit for $399, that I’d be interested in…

That’s a rumour, not a confirmation. And what about “advertised prices effective 7/15/07 - 7/21/07” is it that I’m missing. For me that means the offer ends July 21st.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Remember, there already was a $499 PS3, for the first six months or so…

Yeah it’s kind of crazy when Sony cuts the console $100 and after that it still costs $500.
