Oh, and thanks for the ROE2 manual! Haven’t looked at it yet, though, since I found the ROE1 one. Do you in general recommend ROE2 over 1?
IIRC ROE2 has more content and better AI, but both games are worth playing.
Just another shout out to my old favorite Vendetta Online.
There’s a new crop of space cadets playing these days:

And of course the game is now out for Android (as well as WinRT, iOS for tablets), seamlessly cross-platform alongside PC:
It’s a great game. I’ve been an enthused member for 12 years.

Why haven’t you reported on this game?
And if you have, apologies but how did I miss it? :)
Looking very interesting but I don’t know anything about it. Do you?
That one is my fault. I played a very, very early version of it way back when and then they got picked up by Iceburg and went quiet, so I kiiiinda forgot about it. I have a copy now, but I can’t install it, so wheeeeeee.

No problem, I was yanking your chain. There’s a demo so I’ll probably give it a whirl and report back. The ship models are pretty cool and unique but we’ll see how she plays.
New kickstarter: Infinity Battlescape. Multiplayer space sim in a scale solar system.
Hey, I remember looking at this game years ago.
Pretty impressive video, and I’ve been watching a livestream and some decent potential here. The planetary transitions are impressive. I think these guys will hit their funding.
Two years out from delivery, though, so I think I’ll watch from the sidelines.
Yeah, I too saw this this morning. Not keen on the multiplayer only aspect of it, but I’ll keep an eye on it for sure.
Yeah, the match-based multiplayer is a disappointment for sure.
So I’ve finally started to click with Ascent, and it’s a seriously impressive thing. I was stuck on the story/tutorial portion early in the game, but thankfully this guide helped get me through quite a lot of it. In the process of starting my own little farming colony, it clicked, especially when leaving the first sector and seeing all these colonies and starbases built by other players. It’s still a bit wonky to control and the interface needs work, but for a relaxing PVE experience, it’s a damned good time.

Bah, early access! No thanks. Call me when it’s done.
(Hey, woot! It only took me 10 years to get 188 posts! Here’s to the next 10…)

Well, this sort of came out of nowhere. At first glance it looks like a standard-issue 4X title, with nothing new to offer, but I could be wrong. It certainly doesn’t appear to be Distant Worlds 2, but I can’t tell from the preview if it’s real time or turn based.
If you’re curious, they’re accepting applications for the beta.

Just got this press release for Polaris Sector. They’re looking for beta testers. Anyone hear anything of substance about this?
[I]The ancients who named this sector ‘Polaris’ sure had a unique sense of humor. Polaris - the bright star, the star of hope and faith. Well the Polaris sector has precious little of either; just a wilderness of gas, stars, and supernovae soaked in treachery, oppression, and the lust for power.
With Polaris Sector, developer SoftWarWare is bringing a fresh take on the 4X genre. Obviously, exploring systems with hundreds of stars, exploiting resources and negotiating treaties with other alien factions are essentials for building an empire. However this time players will have to give special attention to the mechanics of technological progress and warfare. Their engineers and scientists provide a high level of flexibility and ultimately the players will have a plethora of options for designing warships and finding the right balance between fundamental and applied sciences. Will they be visionary enough to build weapons and research technologies that will make the difference in battles fought decades from now?

Apparently it’s an already existing game that went through a name change. I can’t for the life of me remember the original name either.
Oh, right, Galaxia: Remember Tomorrow.

That explains why the thread search didn’t turn anything up I guess.

I like the game in theory, but that video absolutely screams 1989.
I am fine with the 1989 gameplay stuff. I like the retro-future tech and the submarine-esque combat. I think it has the potential to be really absorbing and interesting.
I do kind of wish they would keep the low-fi on the monitors, and maybe push the graphics of the environment to be more immersive. I’d love it if it looked like you were sitting in front of Wash’s console on Serenity (dinosaurs optional). Seems like since the backgrounds are essentially static, it’s something they could invest in.
I spent the whole five minutes drooling.
