I’m confused about how they’re classifying a space game, though. Is the definition as broad as “fantasy game”? Skyrim is a fantasy game, but so is Sacrifice, and both are completely different. Angry Birds Space is a space game, right? So is Space Quest. But Descent? That’s not set in space, but you are flying a ship that’s capable of traveling through space. What about Civilization damnit!? You can leave Earth and head into space, so it’s a space game? And of course, Alpha Centauri is DEFINITELY a space game.
I’m not helping, am I? ;)
(at least they got Rogue Galaxy on that list; now THAT is a space game).
It’s about ethics in space game journalism.

- Freespace
- Gal Civ
- AI War
- Master of Orion
- Eve Online
- Kerbal Space Program
- X-wing vs TIE Fighter: Balance of Power
I’m downright disappointed nobody else had pegged AI War yet. You let me down Qt3ers, you’ve let me down.
If anything, the contentiousness of such lists just shows how awesome space games are.

Only 1 list with Starflight. :(

Wish there were a Star Trek game worthy of the list. (Points at his avatar.)
Wow, it’s tough to make such a list. I’ll work on it tomorrow, when I’m more awake.
Birth of the Federation & Emperor of the Fading suns were joint 16th for me. I may have made an error not putting them in :)
Which was the Star Trek TNG game in which you’re fighting Cardassians? I enjoyed watching my friend play all the way through that one from beginning to end.
And I loved Star Trek 25th Anniversary edition back in 1992.
I’ve not played BotF because it looked meh, but putting it on the same level as EFS? Intriiiiguing.
Gah, I’ve no idea, was it an adventure game or a strategy game or…?

You fight a lot (A LOT) of Cardassians in Bridge Commander.
They both have very good memories for me. I did not put them in because the nostalgia goggles maybe too strong. But BoTF was delightfully slow and you had REAL borders (like the show) crossing a border was taken very seriously. The empires in that game felt like empires somehow. You danced around each other with spies, border intrusions and incidents before a full scale war would erupt.*
*decade plus old memory, maybe faulty.

Birth of the Federation basically played like Moo2 on many levels, and it was wonderful being in that universe - really enjoyed that game.
Yes! I believe that was it! Bridge Commander.
Ohhh, that makes sense, I never made it too far in that game because OMG SO BORING.
I’ll have to give Birth of the Federation a whirl, I s’pose.

Were you using manual ship controls or were you trying to play it as a bridge simulator? The former is how you actually have fun with it.
Both. The manual stuff is a bit more fun but it felt damned silly in a game called “Bridge Commander.” Also, after Klingon Academy, Bridge Commander just felt like so many steps backward in terms of feeling like I’m in command of a lumbering starship.
Bridge Commander is an amazing game! I remember the damage models was awesome, you could cut ships in half with your phasers beams.

I loved BOTF and played tons of it. It really was M002 in the Star Trek universe. The only real problem for me was the AI - it never built any higher level ships so it was easy to steamroll them in the mid to late game. However, there are a number of very good mods out there and I would suggest checking those out.
The damage modeling in Klingon Academy was also quite impressive. ;)
Can you point any out specifically?
