I think that’s a reasonable assumption for most people. :)

I think it’s definitely controversial. I saw a lot of flak about it when it came out.

It’s not implied, it’s outright stated in the interface:

I’d also agree that curation makes more sense and is more useful when treated as a way to highlight a corpus of games that you think are worth playing than as a catch-all for every game you’ve registered an opinion on. But I don’t feel all that strongly about it.

Fair enough, I suppose. I usually go to the curator collections and see what they say about the games. As I mentioned above, SEVERAL curators have presented less than spectacular snippets about games that fall within their “pantheons.” However, I will defer to individual preference on how people want to see them used.

Brian is rather cuddly isn’t he? He isn’t floofy though. He could use more floof.

Example of floofy:

Could you work on that, Brian?

Beware of the floof

You’ve not seen me after having gone too long without a haircut.

Heh. You got me there, Brian.

I am drooling over Stellaris and want a space 4x game.

So I tried Stardrive 2 again. It may very well be worse than when I played it just after it came out. The random map generator has the same problem as Galactic Civ 2 did in that the randomness of good planets means you can win or lose right from the start due to no good planets around. Plus diplomacy is still the same psychotic, idiotic mess it always was.

So I loaded up Endless Space. It is still the same soulless game that I played before with many of the old AI bugs (like being able to take over planets during a truce) not corrected.

I am not interested in another game of Distant Worlds. I do not feel like having to learn how to play that all over again.

My Gal Civ 2 version was purchased through Stardock and does not seem to be available for download anymore through their website and I have no intention on purchasing the product again. I am not just a little ticked off that the products I purchased do not seem to be available anymore. The reviews on the newest Galactic Civ 3 are not good enough to make me want to fork over the money again. They seem to say all the same thing which is the older version is more complete plus I am not inclined to give Stardock any more money since my Gal Civ II game has become unavailable.

I go and look at the reviews for Polaris Sector and find that many complain the game is not deep enough. I know Brian seems to like it but when has he not enjoyed a space 4x?

The new MOO game is still in Early Access and seems to have a long way to go to be a complete product. I am not inclined to spend $50 on that at this juncture.

What is a space sim junkie supposed to do?

I’ve not enjoyed many 4Xs.

Fire up Sins of a Solar Empire?

I’d suggest MOO2. Play the largest universe on the difficulty right below impossible. Or if you’re already a veteran, play on Impossible.

I’d recommend Sword of the Stars 1. Maybe Space Empires IV as well, if you’re ok with OK-ish graphics and somewhat limited AI. If you’re OK with real-time and innovation, Star Ruler 2 could be an interesting choice. Finally, if you want something that’s not a full 4X but that has 4X elements, you can try AI War or The Last Federation.

I think I have the same dilemma.

It’s like looking at the ads and recommendations and just itching to spend money.

Will it be Polaris Sector (which may be lacking in depth)? Will it be Star Drive 2 + DLC (which people are saying fixed up the issues)? Will it be Stellaris (which may turn out to be EU in space)? Will it be the new Last Federation DLC?

So many choices… the fear is that I’ll give in to temptation and buy them all and find that I lack the time to enjoy them all… ahhhhhh

I think Sword of the Stars is the best suggestion so far.

Another game with 4X elements that I forgot to mention is Drox Operative.

That’s really an ARPG taking place inside a 4X. Amazing game regardless.

Brian, what’s your take on Ceres? I realize there’s a demo and I’m downloading it now, but wondering if even that is worth my time.

It probably is but I tried playing that for about 5 hours and did not seem to be getting anywhere. So I sort of bounced off that harder than a yoga ball.

It was buggy as hell but had potential to be something very tactically satisfying.
