I noticed X-wing Special Edition and Tie Fighter Special Edition just got new patches today on Steam. I looked at their news page, and it seems like it’s a fix for Windows 10 compatibilty. Neat. Just after I switched to Windows 10! How considerate!

Yup, he did, for the second time. The first was an accident. This time, he said he had to travel somewhere or some such. We had this on the books for a month.

I basically didn’t ask him back or offer to reschedule, because damn.

Welp, Privateer 2: The Darkening won this week’s poll, so that’s what I’ll be playing tomorrow night.

You bastards.

Don’t forget, you can suggest stuff for next week’s poll as well! ;)

DAMN it! I was all set to vote last night (for Privateer 2 - I own it but never played it), but then I saw “The Tomorrow War” on the list. I’d heard of it, but a quick check of my collection revealed that I do not own it, nor do I know anything about it.

So before I voted, I went off to Youtube to check it out, and I saw that it had planetary landings! So I was going to vote for that, but first I went over to eBay to see if I could find a physical copy, and I got totally distracted by various other things on eBay and completely spaced it out until just now. So I went and your poll still registered my vote, not that it matters, it still comes in only second place.

Please put it back on a future list!

But why go to Ebay?

Also:

I did start watching that video (didn’t even notice it was you) last night, but got sidetracked by going over to eBay.

eBay because I have a nice collection on my shelves (it looks impressive when I have visitors, though they all think I’m eccentric. But if I’m so eccentric, why then do ALL of these people seem to enjoy picking up the various boxes and turning them all around to check out screenshots on the back, system requirements on the bottom or side, and some of them even open the box to page through the manual?). I love my little museum.

Anyway that’s why. I also use Steam, but prefer to buy physical copies for my old stuff. Newer stuff doesn’t matter much, but those old boxes are awesome. Not sure if The Tomorrow War is old enough to bother with finding an original box though.

I’m not even sure if there ARE Physical copies of The Tomorrow War. The first time I ever bought it was on GamersGate, for example.

All I could find were these. That appears to be a re-release, but they do exist.

Welcome to another week of space gaming my friends! This week I’ve got a bunch of fun stuff for ya. I was GOING to cover 1998’s Ares Rising for the week, but it totally took a dump on me. Thankfully that left some more time for Stellaris. ;)

I’ve also a preview of Everspace up, and one coming for 3030 Deathwar Redux tomorrow. I also hope to whip up some more stuff this week if I have time.

This Tuesday, at 5:30 PDT on the podcast, we’ll be talking to a returning guest about his work on a virtual TOS-era U.S.S. Enterprise!

Thursday, at 5:30 PDT, what I play is up to you, so go and vote in this week’s poll!

Thanks for being awesome y’all!

Yeah, I also realized there might’ve been some physical release overseas, they had physical releases much later than we did.

Brian, is Starflight: The Lost Colony a good place to sample the Starflight gameplay if the older originals were impenetrable to you? Like, does it have lots of quality-of-life/UX improvements? Or is it designed for true fans, with inside references and difficulty tuned for experts?

If you’ve never played Starflight, it’s a great place to start. Maybe this will help.

MOO3 should not be played unmodded, as it’s broken.

You can download some good mods here: http://www.moo3.at/mods/

The fan patch, when I checked it out (back in the day), actually made the game playable. The UI mods also helped.

Good to know, thanks!

Guys, guys, I’m super excited. Why? Because I just won one of these on Ebay:

Seriously, I can’t WAIT to hook it up and play TIE Fighter with it.

Pardon my ignorance but what will that let you do that the GOG version of TIE Fighter won’t?
Or is my humor meter broken?

This is a MIDI-specific music and sound module that can apparently give a much better sound than more traditional sound cards can in older games like these:

AFAIK, you could do it with software nowdays at a much better quality than any old hardware module, but that’s cool nonetheless.

Sure, there’s an MT-32 emulator but I wanted the thing.

Then I’m very glad that you managed to get it!
