What about Rebel Galaxy?

Oh ya, I tried that too. I enjoyed it for a while but it became too combat-y. It’s almost like Elite Dangerous. It was fun for a while but then it felt empty after a while. I sometimes wonder if I have this itch that’s not able to be satisfied. Hmm, Ah, just checked my Steam Library - FTL and Spaz were the other two recent games which I enjoyed tremendously. Addicted to it even. I need moar!

I had a whole response planned as I couldn’t think of a game that might scratch your itch.

Then it hit me.

3030 Deathwar Redux

That should totally scratch your itch.

There are others I could mention if, somehow, that doesn’t cut it, but I think it will.

Except it’s not finished…

Release Date: 28 Apr, 2016

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
“We will leave Early Access when we are satisfied with the amount of content.
If we had to make an estimate, it would be no less than a few weeks and no more than a few months.”

It’s been over seven months.

Before you kill me, this is on my wishlist. Just wondering when will it be done? :)

wow, Brian, you ARE the space game Master. From the video in Steam, this looked totally awesome! RPG, exploration, conversation, 2D space sim (which even have inertia!!!) - wow! This is so much like Space Rogue/ Space Rangers and it is modern - April 2016 release date! I gotta try it!! Thanks man! Have we discussed this game before?!

Following Space Rangers 2 can be quite hard. There is this freeware clone of Escape Velocity available on Steam that is mentionned here and there around the forums (and whose name I obviously forgot…), but it didn’t fare well against your beloved game when I tried it a couple years ago.
Although it is very casual, maybe give Zigfrak a try? It’s like Rebel Galaxy, but with action oriented combat and much less grind (and much less visual sex-appeal…). There is a demo available.

Edit: haha, a link lookup, and reply is too late already!

not too late. I learned about Escape Velocity from your post and from the home page of the 3030 Deathwar Redux. Looks like 3030 is also built base on inspiration of Escape Velocity. For now though, 3030 looks really interesting!

I can’t seem to find whether 3030 has an overall plot? The one thing I love about Space Rangers 2 (and Spaz) was the fight against that alien species and the threat is always there, so you knew there will be an inevitable final show down. Can’t seem to tell from the product webpage in Steam … and it looks like a final release will be in Jan/Feb 2017. What a great coincidence!

3030 does have a plot, but tons of openness as well. It’s also close to being done.

Hadn’t heard of 3030, but I loooove the EV series.

If you guys love EV, look up Naev and Endless Sky.

I prefer 3030 though.

Ah, thank you! That’s the one whose name I couldn’t remember.

Has there been much progress on SPAZ 2? The early access release looked pretty promising.

Yay, you’re welcome! Great game!

They’ve made a lot of changes and additions to the game during its early access period. I’ve not played in a spell because I’m trying to be patient and wait for the full release, but what they’ve been doing looks VERY promising.

Why is it that none of these games look graphically better than EV Nova?

Because they’re likely made by one person? Also they’re free?

Can’t please some people…

3030 definitely looks better though. ;-)

Whoa, friends, Galactineers – which is coming along really nicely – is going for $0.99 right now!

The question is, is it more legos or erector set?

Blocks/legos.

Fair enough, but we’ve seen some gorgeous titles created by one or two people, and I’d rather pay for something that looks a bit more modern.
