Yeah, and I totally understand why. ;)
I don’t know why. Enlighten me! Is it not worth getting if you just want to enjoy some old school Wing Commander action?
Oh nice! Thanks Brian. I’ve never heard of this one. And it seems like most people on Steam haven’t either. It has less than 30 reviews. (And yours is one of them!)
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that few reviews for a game on Steam before. Especially one that’s been out for almost 3 years.
It is - Tom Chick mentioned it in his “The Most Surprising Games of 2016” list, and I’ve seen him singing its praises in other places as well.
Now, Brian and I followed the game when it was still called “Enemy Starfighter”, and it was supposed to have an open, dynamic world in which choosing/picking your fights was just as important as the moment-to-moment action. Sadly, though, the dev scrapped that in favor of static (and non-branching) missions, which is good if you want Wing Commander, and not so good when what you longed for is something like a good, rich, dynamic evolution of Wing Commander: Armada.
Perhaps the dev will build on the initial release to deliver that original vision in a subsequent title?
Yeah, this. I actually still have an early alpha of Enemy Starfighter around somewhere. Keeping that until I die.
Sadly I don’t think this is likely.

I agree with @BrianRubin that this is unlikely, though perhaps something for the sequel if the original sells well?
I’m currently switching between House of the Dying Sun and Everspace to get my space sim fix (while also replaying Star Trek: Bridge Commander whenever I want more capital ship action). Everspace hasn’t been mentioned recently in this thread, but it’s basically FTL with real-time, space fighter combat featuring 6DOF. Each area in a sector is randomly generated and often quite a lot of fun, with the ability to antagonize certain corporations, go on treasure hunts in asteroids or the wrecks of large space ships, open boxes with loot, hack comm beacons, and so forth.
So if you’re looking for something a bit more free-form than House of the Dying Sun, I’d recommend you check out Everspace. (It’s still in Early Access, but it’s already very polished. However, note that progression will probably be reset a few times on the road to release later this year.)
Bridge Commander? C’mon man, at least play the far, far, fahhahhahhhaaaaaaaar superior Klingon Academy. ;-)

I wish I still had my discs! I’m hoping GOG will add it at some point. They already have Starfleet Academy (which is rather primitive compared to its successor), so I’m not sure why they don’t also have Klingon Academy (especially since it was also published by Interplay).
I don’t get that either, honestly. Probably some obscure liscening bullshit also keeping many other Trek games off GOG.

Some people over on the GOG forums suggested that Klingon Academy has problems working on newer systems and that this is what’s preventing them from adding it to the store. I wouldn’t know why else they’d include Starfleet Academy and Starfleet Command 1, but not e.g. Klingon Academy or the other Starfleet Command games.
Dunno why they’d think that. All they need to do is apply these patches:

And it works like a champ, widescreen too!

That might actually be worth telling the GOG people? If they don’t know already?
I originally found the fixes in a GOG forum thread, so hopefully they’d know. ;)

Has anyone else taken a look at Avorion? I’m not sure how to categorize this game past “Space Game” You build your own ships (ala Space Engineers possibly?), There is a huge procedural galaxy, trading, base building… Seems kind of interesting.
Why, the most recent Space Game Junkie podcast was about just that game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5Qtwj0dnPs
Haha, thanks man!
Yeah, it’s a space builder game, but they actually added a GAME this time. Oh, you don’t actually need to build ships either, you can totally buy a small one right off the bat and then build upon it, or just save up for another pre-built one. It’s really great.
I remember loving the demo so much. I went out to EB North of Bellevue just to get that game, I think it was the Alderwood Mall, something like that. Anyway, long drive, I finally got back, but felt no compelling need to install the game right then. I figured I’d play it when I had my joystick setup again, etc.
So my roommate knew I’d just gone out and bought a new game, so he popped in and said, so hey, what are you playing? I was playing Aliens vs Predator (by Rebellion). He sat down and watched me play for about 15 minutes and he said “well, I can certainly see why you went so far and bought that today”. I had to explain that I’d already owned AvP for a while, and that today I’d bought Klingon Academy.
“You bought a new game and you didn’t even open it yet?”
Looking back, I should have opened that box! I wonder where it is now. I probably have it at the bottom of a box of stuff somewhere.
I’m…not sure I can talk to you anymore…
