Brian, what are your thoughts on After the Empire, releasing today?

It looks intriguing, but it’s by the same developer at The Viceroy, which also seemed like a good idea, but ended up an enigma wrapped in a riddle buried somewhere in the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

I’ve only toyed with the beta a bit but I really liked what I saw. I’ll be diving in this weekend. I got really excited after watching this dev video.

This piqued my interest, but that video is very hard to follow while he goes a million miles an hour through the concepts of the game. From what I can pick up it reminds me of Star Ruler 2 with the decisions to allocate flows of resources and attacks to various sectors rather than dealing with discrete units.

I’d say this is even at a higher level, strategically, than Star Ruler 2. You’re saying to your units, “Declare war on that territory and merge it with our own!” while managing economic, trade and research needs of your empire. There are three different types of War as well, apparently, which sound super intriguing.

Then again, I absolutely loved The Viceroy, so maybe I’m a tad biased.

Also, I update my blog now Monday through Friday with news and such, and talked about this game a bit yesterday. I invite y’all to stop by. ;-)

The fact that the manual is almost three times the length of the manual for The Viceroy (80 pgs vs 30, roughly) makes me nervous.[quote=“BrianRubin, post:4226, topic:67658”]

I wanted to but just couldn’t get past the learning curve. I should really go back to it one day.

I get the impression that the developer is really smart and makes games for himself. Unfortunately that means that unless you’re as smart as he is, his games can be unfathomable.

Fortunately refund is always an option, which I don’t think was the case quite yet when The Viceroy was released.

Judging by the two dev streams, it appears that the game involves pure expansion. That is, you click on opposing empires and (if you get in 1st place on the siege timer) poof, they are yours. I do love the concept, but I’m wondering about longevity and if there’s enough depth besides choosing which type of war.

The dev did talk about economy and research a bit, so I hope those are prominent as well, as those were my favorite parts of The Viceroy.

Just started playing House of the Dying Sun…

the mouse controls in this game are perfect.

At $7, After the Empire falls well within my “why not?” range, so unless early impressions are really poor I’ll probably grab it later. I have started to tackle the 80 page(!) manual.

Is the manual available online, or only via purchase?

That’s still in my backlog. I tried playing with the gamepad and it was a bit rough for me, so maybe I should try M&K.

I was thinking to go Joypad first as it is usually the ‘best fit’ for flying stuff; but after flying a bit with M&K last night and getting used to how to do turn, strafe, switch view etc, it all just feels to natural.

I too have begun to read the manual. It’s a doozy.

Thanks! Do let me know y’all’s thoughts; it isn’t too pricey a buy but I’ve only seen the easy mode on streams…

I’ll be playing it this weekend and putting up vids next week. I’ll play at the normal difficulty level…because it’s normal.

@BrianRubin any thoughts on Lightspeed Frontier?

Yes. Yes. I have thoughts. On the YouTube Channel. And the Podcast. About two hours so far worth of thoughts. All right there. Not hidden. At all. Just…gotta look for them, I guess.

Er.

I mean.

Yes, it’s great, today’s big patch makes it look even better!

Yay!

I’m sorry, it’s just…being asked that drives me CRAZY.

Okay, I was reading an update on Starfighter Inc and they mentioned other realistic space games… “Children of a Dead Earth? Never heard of it. Sounds like a side-scrolling adventure game, but I’ll check it out…”

@BrianRubin, you have failed me! This is Kerbal Space Program with realistic weapons and a sandbox mode where you can build armed ships and have the AI fight each other in them! WHY DID YOU NOT TELL ME ABOUT THIS? Why have you even written about anything else since late 2016???

(I know you did four videos on it, but I am an old and busy man and videos are for the PewDiePie kids. I need words, like we used to put on dead trees!)

Okay, people, please tell me this game is even half as cool as it sounds. Because if it is, I’m not even gonna wishlist it and hope for it go on sale, I’ll just buy it.

Yes, I’m sorry, that was petulant of me. It’s not your fault that apparently my content is invisible on the internet. It just frustrates me so, and your question just basically hit me right between the eyes. I know you didn’t intend it as such, I’m just…gah, I’m sorry. Ignore me everyone.
