Quick, someone license this! I remember loving it as a kid, but have forgotten most of the details.

Oh. Wow.

I think you missed his point :)

I’m not sure I did. ;)

Nice UX podcast @BrianRubin

It put Adios Amigos and Objects In Space on my radar.

Yayyyyyyyyyy! Thanks for listening!

Trying to register at GMG all day. They are having problems.

Did I miss it or didn’t you mention Helium Rain as a great UI game?

Huh, we didn’t mention that one. It’s not the best UI, really, but it’s way better than the X games, for example.

Eh obviously a taste thing but to me they are both bad in their own unique way rather than either being better per se. Both very good games of course, but UI. ehhhhh.

Remind me, what about the UI of Helium Rain bugged you?

Brian as an aside – what do you normally run as a controller in space games? This is relevant to your above question to Rod I think.

Do you go mouse/kb? Controller? or do you still have aa great Joystick set up.

And is there a space game default?

There really isn’t a default, it changes by game. I try to go with what the developer seems to have wanted. For example, with Everspace, they said mouse and keyboard was what the game was designed for so that’s what I used.

For Hypergate, for example, I tried mouse and keyboard, gamepad and my Sidewinder, I used the Sidewinder in the end because it felt the best.

But for the most part these days, you’ll do fine with a mouse, keyboard and gamepad.

Sadly not a ton of games support multi-device HOTAS setups like mine, so most of the time I use my Sidewinder.

It didnt really, same as the X series, I think they are both “meh” in their own way, but I suppose the the push and pick style menus were a little annoying. I also think if the X games gave too much flexibility, perhaps Helium Rain is on the other end of not enough?

I guess my muscle memory just made me emotionally blurt out they are equally “meh”, I could be wrong :)

Fair arguments.

Brian you are and officer and a gentleman. Ty.

I mean more of a space officer --maybe a Captain of some forlorn starship. Lost among the stars with a fairly able but perhaps eclectic crew. Maybe a good 4 seasons of Firefly worth at least.

And as far as gentleman is concerned, well, you are always polite and responsive here.

(Control schemes on space games is my number one priority. Thx!)

You’re welcome!

And I heartily agree. A game’s control scheme can make or break it. Exemplary examples like Freespace 2 or 3030 Deathwar are few and far between.

So this just came out today, looks nifty, hope to try it this weekend.

Sunless Skies also drops today.

Busy times for space gamers right now. Yikes.

Halcyon 6 super duper version is coming or is out on Switch, and it looks pretty cool…I would appreciate any thoughts from the PC version and this seems to be the thread to ask. Thanks in advance!

Holy cow I had no idea this was coming. MUST HAVE.
