It’s an amazing and terrifying game that is totally worth $6 because if it clicks for you, you’ll play it for years. YEARS I TELL YOU.

Staroid Tactics, which appears to be some sort of 4X launches on Steam later today. Anyone know anything about it?

Nope, just found out about it my own self, but I plan to give it a whirl this weekend. Stay tuned!

Yeah, I looked on your site and didn’t see anything, which was kind of surprising. The only thing I can find is a teaser trailer that isn’t very helpful.

I did a google search for Staroid Tactics and Google kept asking me if I meant “Steroid”

Couldn’t find a thing.

Any game with the word Tactics in the title automatically gets my attention. So even if it WAS “Steroid Tactics” I’d be interested.

Same, but it’d also not fit here, since that’d just be Out of the Park Baseball.

Or Madden 2015.

Slowly information is trickling out. Someone in the Steam forum posted a link to this, indicating that there’s some sort of CCG mechanic in the game. Also the developer had this to say:

We have skipped a lot of the micromanagement parts that exists in the genre, so no ship customization, no race customization, no planet management. We want a game that is fast and fun and goes back to the roots of space strategy games (like for example Supremacy/Overlord) and flirt with board games.

Battles are automated, like in for example Advance War (NDS) or early Battle Isle (PC, Amiga), but we are adding some additional options to battle as a bonus after release (“some dice rolling”).

Cards are not the only way to gain resources. By conquering planets and additionally by terraform them you collect resources continuously. Cards are actually optional (you choose in game setup). Pretty much everything is optional here so you can create your own type of game setup that totally differ from other players.

Cards are gained by conquering planets. Cards can be traded in for resources or for their effect (rare cards have effects). Only one effect per player can be played per turn. Artefacts are the other cards you see in the screenshots (purple). These are very powerful and grant you permanent effects that is always to your favour.

Victory conditions vary depending on what settings you select for the game but the standard victory condition is to eliminate all opponents (not neutral forces though, if that option is enabled). If you use artefacts then you are able to win the game but collecting a certain number of these (currently three, out of a total of six possible artefacts).

Sounds like they are going for a board game aesthetic, which is fine by me. If they can keep the game enjoyable while simplifying it, it could be another Spaceward Ho!, which would also be OK with me. Anyway, there’s supposed to be some gameplay footage up some time today, but for $15 I’m pretty close to pulling the trigger.

I’ll finally be able to play some on Sunday. Can’t wait!

Not soon enough Brian. We demand a review NOW!

Okay then, come down here and help me move all the boxes and furniture that are in the way of me snaking an ethernet cable to my PC so I can download and play it sooner. Deal? ;)

Gameplay video is up. There’s no real explanation of what’s going on, but from what I can tell you use ships to paint the galaxy your color.

I definitely get a boardgame vibe out of it, and it appears that cards, neutral races, and FOW can be turned on or off to make the game more or less deep. You know what? For $15 I’ll take a shot and report back later.

There’s a lot about gameplay here, good and bad, that I could say. It really is a streamlined board-gamey space strategy game, and in spite of a feature or two in the manual that no one can find in the game (races having affinities for certain planet types), there is potential here for some beer 'n pretzels fun. But all of that is irrelevant for one simple basic reason.

You can’t save the game.

I’ll say that again, in case it didn’t come through. This is a lite turn-based strategy game in which an average game board is composed of 50 planets, and a large game can have as many as 100. There aren’t save points. There are no autosaves. Your games isn’t saved when you quit. THERE IS NO WAY TO SAVE THE FUCKING GAME!!! In mid-game the options menu has no save button. There’s a load button, but it’s non-functional. When starting a new game and selection single player, the only option is to start a new game - there is no option to load one. In other words YOU CAN’T SAVE THE FUCKING GAME!!!

See THIS THREAD?. Prior to release saving the game was listed as a feature and some jokers poked fun at the developer for listing it. So the developer apparently took it out.

I’ve read how hard it is to get Steam to issue refunds, and in over 200 purchase (a pittance, I know) this will be the first time I seriously try to get one.

Don’t let this happen to you.

What? Not having the ability to save is truly bizarre. Thanks for taking one for the team with that. I hope you get your refund.

Well thank you tgb for taking one for the team. That is truly bizarre, and I hope you can get your money back.

Doesn’t Steam screen these games for basic features like save?

My god, a game not having saving functionality is like a fish not having gills. WTF
