Starpoint Gemini 2 comes out Friday.

Today we have not only Ancient Space but the beta of The Last Federation’s first expansion.

Wheeeeee!

is ancient space any good? what kind of game is it really? i dont really get what the gameplay is like from its steam page.

You’re in luck, we interviewed a producer at Paradox about it this morning, which included an hour of streaming it. :)

I’m liking it so far, albeit my time with it has been brief.

So, Brian and other Qt3ers, if you had to pick just one of these recent space games, which would you recommend? I’m thinking in particular of Starpoint Gemini 2, Ancient Space, the new Elite, and X3: Terran Conflict (and maybe X3:AP too). X3:TC/AP looks cool, and I’m sort of leaning in that direction; but if I bought that, I’m not sure I’d have the time or patience for any of the other games.

For me, as of right now, based on stuff you can actually buy, for me it’d be a tough fight between Elite: Dangerous and Starpoint Gemini 2. They’re both just fantastic.

Once Enemy Starfighter comes out though, it’ll be a new ballgame.

Between the two of those, i bounced right off of starpoint gemini, whereas Elite Dangerous sucked me the fuck in right away. YMMV

Thanks for your thoughts, guys. Hmm! All these good games at the same time. Nice problem to have.

Indeed, lovely and surprising. :)

Wohooo! Limit Theory Update #20 is finally here :)

Man, I just hit the worst wall ever with TIE Fighter, a game I love just so much. I’m in the ninth tour of duty, part of the Defender of the Empire expansion, and the missions are just getting more and more brutal. It’s beginning to feel difficult for the sake of being difficult, rather than presenting an honest challenge for a veteran pilot. I’ve done these missions now where I have no wingmen – which makes things even more difficult – and reinforcements I can’t give orders to. I have to protect all these different targets, but can only be in one place at a time. The last mission took five attempts to finish. The current one I’m on, I just failed twice, and now I’m dreading missions rather than looking forward to them.

I’ve finished this game three or four times. I’m wondering if right now I’m just losing patience or just aren’t as good a pilot as I used to be. It’s just super duper frustrating.

Part of me thinks “Fuck it, I have more choice in gaming now than I did in 1994, I should play something that’s actually fun.”

Ugh. It saddens me so because I just adore this game so very much, and it feels like it’s abusing me right now.

Work should not a game make young Brian. Strange things the Dark does, games without fun make us play.

Tie fighter was at its most fun before those tie defenders and like joined the fray. Suddenly your a one man army, and not a cog in the machinery and part of something bigger…

The X-wind series in general i often hit brick walls with, ‘luck’ (or the Force!) could often mean the difference between months of frustration or not. Still damn awesome games though, never really bettered for the near perfect Star Wars vibe.

Does anyone remember Haegemonia: Legions of Iron? Because it’s now available for iOS and Android!

Awesome, and not surprised at all since its (I feel) superior predecessor Imperium Galactica 2 has been available on mobile for some time now. :) I just wish Ascendancy would make its way to Android.

Ugh, agree. It was so easy in a Tie Defender to destroy multiple wings of fighters, and capital ships that weren’t even designed to be engaged just for the hell of it. 3 Nebula frigates warped in, get out of there! Nah, I’ll just explode them all in my invincible death machine. I remember enjoying the hell out of it for a few hours, and then realizing that it had kind of ruined the game for me because I felt like I was cheating, even though I wasn’t. I remember thinking that even if five Calamari Cruisers came at me at once, it would just be more tiresome than dangerous destroying them.

So, Rebel Galaxy looks worth mentioning here. Firefly aesthetics, emphasis on capital ships, Star Control-like aliens, and a freeform procedural galaxy, from Eric Schaefer and Travis Baldree.

Interesting that it’s PC and PS4 only so far.

Oh man, I’m so glad this is finally announced. It’s been killing me!
