Splice: Spoiler Thread

What would you call it if not a horror movie? Or sci-fi horror, if you like.

A cronenberg joint?

Well I don’t know that categorization is really necessary, but if pushed I’d just call it sci-fi.

I’d pretty much argue that as soon as you’ve got inter-species rape and impregnation, you can add a -horror tag.

Saw this yesterday and I was really disappointed by it. First off, the science was just plain awful accross the board. This would be fine (maybe) if this was just a straght up gore fest, but this movie put on some pretension of having more on its mind than that. They should have just replaced the scientists with magicians given how poorly they adhered to any kind of scientific reality. One of the sillier things was the “artificial womb” with an actual birth canal built in. This served no purpose except for a place for the chick to get her arm caught and a black bag to hide the creature in. The two main characters never showed any kind of actual intelligence and their rock star/anarchist vibe would not have been tolerated by any sane pharmacuetical company. “What’s the worst that could happen?” is a pretty piss poor credo to invest millions of dollars into.

I just don’t get why they thought they could just dump Dren in the store room (and later the barn). These were both terribly dangerous places for any type of creature to roam around in and were so lacking in any kind of security as to be laughable.

What surprised me the most was how unscary and, frankly, undisturbing this movie was for me. I guess it really cuts through the tension if you don’t give a shit if a main character is offed or not. Clive and Elsa were so stupid and every single “shocking” moment was telegraphed by blatant “foreshadowing” that I hardly ever cared enough to react to anything. Any releationship to a Cronenberg movie is superficial at best.

I will say that both the idea of Dren and the actual character in the movie are interesting, but Dren really deserves a better movie.

Enh, looks like we’ll have to agree to disagree on that one. I am OK with the science taking a back seat, because fuck, any kind of real science on this would be like, great, we made a small blob of cells that died after a week! Yay us! Let’s keep doing that for 50 years and maybe we’ll have a viable fetus that will die after a week!

Anyway, I suppose you will be upset to hear that Natali has been tapped to direct Neuromancer. Me, I’m psyched :-D

Oh who the hell cares. The movie had more on its mind than gore, but none of what it had on its mind was science. I’m sorry that you went into this expecting it to be a documentary, but you may not have done your due diligence. When whoever you saw this movie with asked you if you wanted to see Splice, instead of agreeing right away you should have said “Oh, is that that new Nova special about gene splicing?” To which they’d reply that no, it’s actually a sci-fi movie starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, and then you could decline or at least consent to see it armed with the knowledge that it is, in fact, a work of fiction.

This genre confusion was the biggest problem for the film. The trailers made it seem like absolutely ridiculous, terrible schlock that The Fucking Pianist should have nothing to do with (sort of like the new Predator). But the actual product was deep, with well-written characters and a superb development arc for Dren. Then there was the tired ending and sequel setup, which were back to trashy horror.

Oh man. That’s really disappointing. I’ve only had the bravery to shush talkers once. They were teens, and with a quick “shut the fuck up” they got the message. I had talkers at The A-Team and that didn’t matter one bit, but this film must really have been ruined.

Finally saw this today with the wife and we both hated it. The characters are ridiculously stupid, and there’s really no credibility that anyone would manage to pull something off like that without any company oversight noticing what was happening. Elsa is neurotic beyond description and Clive was incredibly weak with his inability follow through on anything of importance. The plot was eye-rollingly predictable as well.

I’m so glad I didn’t pay to see this when it was in the theater.

I love this, and I think it is more psychological horror than torture porn/gore fest.

Clive had sex with Dren, which is sick (kind of like having sex with your hamster). Then Dren, spliced with Elsa’s DNA, turning from female to male and raped Elsa. That is extra sick (borderline incest?). The end Elsa got knocked up by Dren and was keeping that ‘abomination’. Extra extra sick.

Where can I get a hamster as hot as yours must be?

He didn’t say “my hamster”, he said “your hamster”. Make sure that cage is locked when you’re not around.

I loved this movie. There were so many parts where I was shouting out “no, that is not going to happen now … holy cow!” that I’m definitely glad I Netflixed it.

I mean, the creation scene, the birth scene, the realization that this thing might be sentient an learning, the first time it’s in a dress, the awesome stinger, the kitty scenes, the makeup scene, the sex scene, the fantastic scene after the sex scene, almost the whole thing was awesome. I would actually have liked to see it end after they bury her, but I can see why they’d want to set up a sequel. Cut that ending off and it’s the best sci-fi/horror movie I’ve seen all year.

I love sci-fi/science and was hoping to like Splice but I found it very dull.

I shouldn’t even bump this thread, but I am SHOCKED that people across the board didn’t just hate this as we did. It was laughable at parts, mostly just painful and eye-roll inducing elsewhere. Just bad on all fronts. Acting was piss poor, direction, CG was not too good, and the script… good lord the script. These characters say things nobody would ever say… every time they open their mouths. Dammit, what a waste of time.

I thought it was interesting, despite relying on the old MAN IS THE TRUE MONSTER riff. They essentially abused this creature into the true monster that it became. It wasn’t inherently evil, but through their own mistakes and hangups they turned the creature into a monster. I don’t know about you guys, but I found myself rooting for him/her at the end.

Given that it turns into a murderer/rapist at the end, that was a bit of a stretch for me.

It was a case of Dren’s “parents” reaping what they sowed. Dren was a product of their abuse. Awful things ensued. Certainly I was rooting for her to escape and get away from them. Not so much the raping and murdering part, but I could understand why Dren ended up doing those things.

Yeah, I can understand “escape”, but butchering of innocent people and the rape of it’s mother figure was just a little beyond that :)

Just finished watching this gem for the first time on Netflix.

Jesus christ this is the stupidest movie I’ve watched in years. Adrian Brody is above this, and Sarah Polley might be the worst actress I’ve ever seen.

The instant I saw Guillermo del Toro’s stupid name in the opening credits I knew right then I’d be a fool to keep watching. Except for Pan’s Labyrinth, I’ve detested everything that guy has touched.

Sad to see this movie after the director gave us the wonderful, Cube.
