I was under the impression that the Romulan ship succumbed to the effects of the red matter because it got hit with all of it (in the canister) as opposed to the one droplet that was typically used.
Also this film was highly enjoyable and I laugh at all of you dudes who hated it. I laugh! Please do go on about how it wasn’t up to snuff as compared to the HA HA HA HA prior films. Oh, that’s funny, that is. Like those were all written with airtight plotlines and snappy, crisp dialogue and scenes.

That was Gene Roddenberry’s utopianism. By the time Roddenberry passed away, Berman and Braga made sure the Federation discovered the joys of “gold-pressed latinum”.

They already have done Space Jews, see Bajorans. (and the Cardassians as Space Nazis, of course.)
Wasn’t that a robot on the hoverbike? I couldn’t be sure, but I’d gotten that impression.
Anyhow, I believe people would still want to be police. Many people see it as a tradition and a point of honor - and, hell, they don’t exactly make that much now on the average, considering what they put themselves into.
It could also be seen as a career entry-point.
My son who is 9 loves several pieces of classical music. Most are around 200 years older than him. its not impossible. Its just what kids are exposed too. If Kirk’s step dad listens to it, he might take a liking to it as well.
Er, let’s go with his mom. I got the vague impression Kirk didn’t entirely get along with his stepdad. Not sure why, I think it was a sixth - or possibly even a seventh - sense.
And seeing as Kirk’s stepdad has a thing for classic muscle cars from 250 years ago, it’s not unlikely that he also listens to “classic rock” from 250 years ago.
Also, remember – we don’t know how long music will keep in the future. The main reason you don’t hear a lot of music ca. 900AD is because there are no recordings of it. Recordings from the 20th and 21st centuries, meanwhile, will be around forever. If the music manages to hold up and remain relevant, who knows what we’ll be listening to 300 years from now.
This is being waaaay over-analyzed. Young Kirk was listening to the Beasty Boys/driving cars off cliffs etc because Abrams designed him to appeal to the X-TREME demographic. I’m only surprised that he wasn’t slamming Dews and strapped to a snowboard all the while.

I hope to see the day in a contemporary action movie when the young rebel steals his dads classic model T and rocks out old-timey barber shop music. Complete with Nokia product placement.
Actually, the more I think about it, the biggest problem with the car scene is the lost opportunity. They should have used next year’s Dodge Challenger update! Because in the future, it’s about as old. Hell, they should have used some concept car, or a Tesla or something. (So quaint, it runs on ‘electrical batteries’")
As stated in the other thread I loved the movie. The plot holes and science mistakes I can deal with, but there were a couple of fluff scenes that should have been edited out.
The double snow creature scene: its been done so many times before its painful
The transporter error sending Scotty through the pipes: I thought it was funny that Scotty ended up in the big tank, but overdone when he went on the trip through the system.
Neither scene added narrative. They were simple throwaway action scenes. Replace them with character scenes or exposition or whatever.
I had the same issue with this you did, but felt in an action movie it made for a nice transition to Kirk ending up in Spock’s cave. The movie would have sagged a bit if he just walked there.
In all honesty, I found the entire scene largely superfluous and a waste of time. It was like the Harry Potter 10-minute flying scene at the end of one of the recent movies (can’t remember which) or the joyride at the beginning of (ugh) Crystal skull. In a film where there’s so much already being crammed together for time, a scene like this that doesn’t really advance the plot proportional to the amount of time being spent on it just feels like a waste of celluloid.
I totally didn’t realize that was Winona Ryder until the credits rolled, though I suppose I should have recognized her from the scene-stealing…
It seemed like a really weird choice - almost distracting.
I mean for the role, for Star Trek, compared against the rest of the cast, etc.
I think it’s actually an important scene for the new version of the characters, as Kirk Prime was never that wild that young. Kirk Prime was a creative thinker who was happy to bend rules, but he wasn’t a delinquent. Lensflare Kirk has major daddy issues and no respect for authority on a very primal level, and that new wrinkle to the character was introduced in this scene and shown to be integral to his personality from a very young age. It’s the “not your father’s James T. Kirk” scene. Whether or not kids will be blasting 200 year old songs when they steal 200 year old cars for joyrides in the future remains to be seen, though.
