I’m mostly interested in playing the new GRiD without having to pay for the new GRiD.

The staggered rollout didn’t stagger into New England yet though, apparently.

I have 5 non-GSuite gmail accounts and none of them worked, so who knows how they’re rolling it out? Maybe it’s just really slow right now.

This part of the press release is genius:

As reported upthread, they were having trouble with 4k anyway, and now coronavirus hits and they have a good (legitimately good, not bullshit good) reason to restrict it to 1080p.

It isn’t restricted, you can still tell it to go to 4K. That’s just the default dropping. I really don’t see it as a problem. There’s plenty actually wrong with stadia to criticize.

I got the Stadia trial last night and played Grid and Destiny for a few hours with a generic X-Box controller on a wired connection. It works just fine for bad players like me who don’t try to do things where milliseconds matter. If they came out with an awesome free AAA game (they aren’t giving these users Doom Eternal) I’d spend more time with it. I’m not sure who will spend $60 on a game during a two month trial they risk losing access to.

This fills a weird sweet spot for me. Destiny 2 is a game I kind of like, but not enough to keep on my hard drive. A no-cost way to play it on Google’s servers works out well. I wish they had ESO on here as another “free” game.

Of course, once the free trial is over, I’ll be done. I’m not buying a damn thing on this.

For some reason my main GMail account can’t get in, but I made a brand new GMail account and the Stadia doors were wide open for that one.

So I played some GRiD, which is really the only one of the nine free games I’m interested in and it was fine.

Although “Technique: Zero” is rude.

I would play a non twitch game. Maybe an RPG. Are there any?

You’ll still have access to purchased games. Pro is if you want 4K, HDR and whatever games they put out on it.

Ah, I didn’t know that. I think I mixed up people not being able to sign up for free (until this week) with no free service being available. Classic Stadia marketing communications.

Finally allowed me in, neat.

Everybody remember to cancel your subscription so you won’t be charged in June!

Ahhh you needed to hit the enter key yesterday! Well today that is no longer required, there’s a button.

Played a bit of Destiny 2. No stuttering, but I have an extremely fast wired internet connection. Graphics looked a bit crappy and there was a small amount of perceptible input lag. Seemed OK. You know, freeshit++.

Honestly i feel like the largest obstacle against Stadia has almost nothing to do with Stadia and everything to do with the absolute glut of free or near free games today.

Fortnight is free (though kids will eventually spend on skins), tons of near-free games on Xbox pass, PS Plus, now Apple Arcade, still plenty of FtP games on PC, ect. The very tiny subset that Stadia aims at just feels so rarified and frankly hyper-urban, like NYC/London/SF/HK sorts of places.

If you want to play Destiny 2 with a mouse and keyboard, you can either build a gaming PC for around $800 all-in or go with Stadia on pretty much anything. Now most people that care about mouse/keyboard controls already have gaming PCs, of course.

Yeah - supporting a few popular free games on the service seems like the ticket to boost its usage numbers drastically but I guess they don’t want to do it until each stuff are in place to make money off of it somehow? Probably something to rollout once they get the YT integration working, if I had to make a guess.

Stadia’s pretty similar to GeForce Now, isn’t it? Is there any major difference between the two from a high level conceptual architecture?

Because some folks were getting some impressive results on GeForce Now, running on stupid crap like tiny pocket computers (the little stick form factor you plug into a TV).

Nah, IMO it’s nothing to do with that as that would mean that they could actually compete in terms of their anemic catalog. The primary problems are the dearth of games coupled with the performance issues on the client side. Without exclusives there really is no tangible incentive for gamers to invest in the platform. Especially since the games can be obtained and played on other platforms without going through all the hassles that the Stadia platform entails.

It’s also the problem they’re having with us devs (at least those who they have approached) due to the install base not making it a worthwhile investment for most devs (especially indies). Developing for Stadia is a whole new ball game - and for some reason, with all the talent they have on this thing, they keep making missteps seemingly on a daily basis with what would have otherwise been a major contender. They’ve botched this whole thing since day one and I personally don’t see how they could possibly recover without a major change in their approach as it pertains to curating games, gaming outreach etc.
