Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

No takebacks! :)

He’s an Arsenal supporter. That doesn’t make sense either. :)

Ha! Touché.

Then again, so am I, as it happens. :)

So now that SC has been in more than critical analysis phase for the last 2 months. What big things are due within next 3 months? Any really big milestones? I think if they miss anything big planned, the ship’s hull will finally have too many flooded chambers to stay afloat.

I want this to succeed. I have the super cheap backer thing from the first kickstarter and can’t afford stuff for the game, but I love what they have planned.

3.0 still needs to come out.

And at this point, nobody really knows when that will happen, alas.

December 2016, duh.

Well, they are at GamesCom this week. So.

Word is that the invited streamers are going to be playing the current 2.6.3 build. No word yet on whether or not 3.0 will actually be played live. I remember when, mere months ago, the German shills over at GameStar.de as well as PC Gamer, claimed to have “played” a 3.0 build; then subsequently wrote major puff pieces.

But no fear! They have a new ship sale. $400! <---- that was NOT a typo.

Yes - the whole thing is so hilarious now, that it beggars belief.

Are their forums going nutso yet?

No, but check my Twitter feed for the latest hilarity. They’re actually playing “levels” - right now - at GamesCom, while trying to pass it off as the 3.0 “game”

Keeping it classy, I see.

That’s your moral compass, not mine. And your inconsequential and misplaced indignation are lost on me.

They are both PUBLIC FIGURES who have scammed over $156M from gamers, and who, nepotism (the point!) aside, have continued to do just that. If she wasn’t a part of the company, this won’t be worthy of note.

It was so unimportant back when they were actively HIDING the fact that they were married, until I broke the news - and forced Chris to acknowledge the fact that the VP of Marketing he has been pretending to NOT know before the project, was actually his wife. Even as some backers were telling me that I was making shit up.

Fact is, the wealth of this project, is going to THREE members (we know all of them) of a family, plus some of their close friends (we know all of them). And so far, $156M later, they have FAILED to produce ANYTHING of value that was promised.

In addition to around 400 employees and four studios.

To quote last year’s article from Kotaku UK:

It is difficult, after all these months of research and having heard from so many people involved with the project, to seriously entertain the notion that Star Citizen is some kind of intentional scam. Hundreds of people all over the world are working hard on it, and have been for years. Although there have been plenty of scandalous allegations, not one of them has checked out in our research – though of course nobody outside of its management team has full visibility on Cloud Imperium’s finances. If Star Citizen goes down – and it yet might – it will likely be because its sheer scope is out of step with the reality of actually making it, or because the money runs out, or because it’s taken too long and its funders have finally withdrawn their support. If there is anything more nefarious than that going on, we have found no convincing evidence of it.

It’s not an intentional scam, and it isn’t going down due to any of those three reasons. It’s failing due to a fine mélange of ambition and incompetence.

Ah yes, the usual “they have a company and employees, so it’s totally not a scam”.

You’re an ignorant fool.

Indeed. It also doesn’t have to be a scam for Chris Roberts & Co to have used it as a ‘get very rich, very quick’ vessel while still fully believing that they can deliver a game.

Right, it’s unnecessary to assign malign intent when incompetence and greed suffice.

Precisely. And the reason that nepotism and favoritism keep coming up is because of the involvement of Chris, his wife Sanid, his brother Erin, his long time biz partner Ortwin, his long time friends Zurovek, Senior et al. A total of 9 of them who wouldn’t be making the money they are making now if they were working at any video game company. Heck, Erin, according to public records, is making almost 2x what anyone in his position in the UK would be making.

Very true. However, the very act of continuing to raise funds for a game they know full well they have no chance of delivering on, is where the “scam” part of this comes from. Setting aside the issues of them changing the ToS to favor the company, while stripping backers of previous recourse they once had in the previous ToS versions.

When you’re selling JPEGs of game assets for a game that’s nowhere near complete, while lying to backers about the status of said game, that’s a scam.

I was specifically responding to your assertion that the wealth of this project is going to a handful of people. No need to misrepresent my post and engage in name-calling.
