Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

They’re both about chasing whales, it’s true.

Doomsayers such as myself aside, the project seems to still be making a ton of money. I keep flipping from being sure it’ll fail to thinking it could basically go on forever.

¿Por que no los dos?

Lately I’ve been starting to wonder if maybe this isn’t such a bad thing.

I mean, it is. Obviously. It’s ridiculous.

But, on the other hand, it seems lots of folks are happy buying into the promise of something and watching it grow. It’s gamified anticipation without the inevitable letdown of a finished game. Who am I to judge, live and let live, etc.

Perhaps the metagame is the game, the greatest piece of gamedev performance art ever enacted.

I mean, it’s not that far off from a religion. Keeping the faith and filling the collection basket.

As you describe it, that’s exactly what it is.

Can I get an Amen*, brothers and sisters?

*Amen .jpg $350, no actual Amen

Oh, it absolutely is a cult at this point. And one that needs new members of the “congregation” to keep things going.

The very worst thing that CIG/RSI could ever do at this point is actually release a game.

It’s like The Producers, sort of. It all falls apart if it actually works.

Any old rock music fans?

In the case with SC, the waiting is the game…

I still think it looks like a pretty cool game, though there’s no way I’d invest any money on it at this point. If it ever does get released though … maybe.

Makes me think that someone should start developing a Star Citizen killer. A game with 10 times the features. Something that would put Star Citizen to shame.

@Gordon_Cameron really should start a DERPSPACE fund raising campaign.

So that happened. ICYMI

So basically they bought (with backer money) Turbulent shares in a cash + stock (worthless CIG stock) transaction.

It’s basically a Ponzi scheme; so it is bound to fail at some point. I mean, YE2017 they were out of money. Hence the $46m bailout. It’s what happens in Ponzi schemes were the minute you stop bringing in new money to fulfill the requirements of old money, it all falls apart.

This is the biggest load of crap I’ve ever seen for a company describing what they do:

Turbulent helps ambitious companies unlock the potential of their audience. Through an approach that is fun and transparent, we co-create improbable impact. Immersing ourselves in the business of our client we deliver strategic guidance and craft custom technology that increases revenue, improves processes and enriches user experience

They synergize the fucking paradigm, @jpinard!

Get on fucking board!

Well it is a marketing company, so it’s apt that they’d eat their own dog food.

I think it’s a little more awesome that that if I understand it right. They used backer funds to buy the Turbulent shares but then had Turbulent owners buy some worthless CIG stock from them as people/owners, not from CIG. So that part is a direct cash payout to Roberts and crew hidden in the transaction.

At this point I’m beginning to… admire the sleazery of Roberts & Co.

It’s like, if I had access to a bunch of whales like they do, I might just suffer a complete absence of morality just because.

(Or I’d buy a compound and come up with the “First Church of Christianity Without Christ, PhD”)
