Having it built into the main game makes more sense to me. Hard to get mad about that.

Steel girders don’t melt at the temperature that jet fuel burns!
Will there be a Star Marine? No. Then it’s cancelled.
If CIG is going to put most of it into the PU, then the PU gets new features. Still not Star Marine. Is that really that hard to understand?
Star Marine: cancelled. Will people lose anything? Maybe they will, maybe not. Is that a good thing? Maybe it is, maybe it’s not.
But Star Marine (the separate FPS thing) is cancelled. Period. Simple as that.

Will there be a Star Marine?
I think so?
I mean, every actual statement so far has said so. Did that article have a source that said otherwise? I didn’t see any actual links to anything.
That article actually quoted them saying, specifically, that star marine wasnt cancelled, and while we’d see most of the mechanics in the persistent universe first, that they were still planning on making the actual start Marine module.
Maybe I just missed the link saying that it was cancelled?
Here’s the source. I hope it’s official enough? https://youtu.be/GGreb21dKdg?t=1110

I would ironically find it encouraging if they were finally cutting the scope down after years of stretch goal creep. It would mean they finally started setting realistic goals.
As a software architect/developer/manager, I agree with you.
Of course, that also means a lot of broken promises, I suppose. But if it helps getting the game done (and perhaps done better), than it’s preferable to the alternative.
There will be a Star Marine.
There still will be Star Marine.
Incorrect.
No.
Star Marine was originally going to be our first chance to try the FPS mechanics (designed by Illfonic). The FPS mechanics took so long to develop that the Persistent Universe came out first, and so they decided to throw in the pistol and assault rifle because those were the only weapons that were really ready to go at that point. They are going to continue working on the rest of the weapons and gadgets, which will be added to the Persistent Universe as they are finished.
The button to launch Star Marine currently sits next to the button for Arena Commander in the Electronic Access menu, but it is greyed out. Once all of the weapons and gadgets are done, the Gold Horizon space station map is polished, and the code for leaderboards and competitive rounds are complete, they will activate Star Marine. At that point, there will have been nothing cut from the game mode. The big change in development is that you will have already been able to try out the components that will go into Star Marine beforehand in the PU. Chris Roberts said all of this in the source you just posted, although I understand how it might be confusing if you haven’t played the game.
When Star Citizen releases, Arena Commander and Star Marine will both continue to exist as “VR” playgrounds where you can train and compete without risking your persistent property like ships, ammunition, or character lives.

He specifically says that it’s still in the pipeline and isn’t cancelled.
I mean, you actually linked to the exact point where he says exactly that. How are you watching that, and then interpreting it to mean the literal opposite of what he says?
That sounds reasonable. Thanks for the clarification.
Star Marine, which was to be a standalone product, will no longer be a standalone product. Furthermore, there will be no release called Star Marine. In pretty much any media ever, this is what people mean when they use the word “cancel”.
That the content is being put somewhere else doesn’t mean Star Marine, the standalone product, hasn’t been cancelled. As far as pointless semantic arguments go, you guys are losing this one.

All I heard was marketing speak for “hey, we changed our plans; I won’t say it’s cancelled, just that it will be something else we’re working on that’s ‘close enough’”. But then again, the Star Citizen project as a whole feels so fragmented and “impromptu”, that it might just be my internal software developer alarms going off more than they should.
Well, at least someone understood it the same way I did. Let’s hope Ryan Kelly is right on what he said, though.
But there will be a seperate game mode called “Star Marine” with its own logo, title screen, and game mechanics not found in the Persistent Universe (fixed teams, quick respawns, and game-y objective based modes). The button to launch Star Marine will be right next to the button that launches Arena Commander, which has its own logo, title screen, and game mechanics not found in the Persistent Universe (fixed teams, quick respawns, and game-y objective based modes). Star Marine was always intended to be the FPS equivalent of Arena Commander (which is for dogfighting).
Star Marine was never meant to be a seperate program with its own shortcut on your desktop. It was meant to be the FPS equivalent of Arena Commander. Nothing in the original blueprint has been cancelled.
So I will be able to buy Star Marine and nothing else? It’s just that the buttons for the PU and Arena Commander won’t work?
No, Star Marine is a game within a game, just like Arena Commander. It was never meant to be anything else. I edited my previous post to rephrase it correctly as I didn’t realize what Tom was implying at first.

Star Marine, which was to be a standalone product, will no longer be a standalone product. Furthermore, there will be no release called Star Marine.
Star Marine was never intended to be a stand alone product. It was intended to be exactly like arena commander. Essentially a module of the FPS mechanics prior to being integrated into the persistent universe. Again, exactly like arena commander was for the space combat.
These two modules exist in the larger star citizen universe as “virtual” games. Essentially games within the game, where you can compete in a more arcade like manner, with scoreboards and stuff, using virtual equipment you don’t actually own in the game.
That the content is being put somewhere else doesn’t mean Star Marine, the standalone product, hasn’t been cancelled.
But the part where they say that Star Marine is still in the pipeline, and is still going to be released, does in fact mean that it hasn’t been cancelled.
In that 10 for the chairman, he says exactly that.
He goes on to explain why it’s not really a big deal at this point, since it’s original purpose has already been achieved, since they have already developed the FPS mechanics and integrated them into the PU… But he also points out that they are still planning to release Star Marine proper into the game. Probably because it will play a minor role even in the full PU as a virtual environment for things like competitions.
I’m still thinking I must be missing some release or something where they said they aren’t releasing star Marine? I mean, the one cited video actually says they are releasing it, in its originally envisioned form. I don’t understand what you are reading that said otherwise.

He didn’t even say they changed their plans in that though, in terms of what they are releasing as Star Marine. He specifically says the opposite.
What sentence are you hearing him say that you are interpreting as a cancellation? This is the part I don’t get. You are literally interpreting it as the opposite of what he says. That’s so weird.
Then why did they say this in October?
Hey guys! One big clarification from CitizenCon: the Baby PU is NOT replacing Star Marine, it’s simply going to include a lot of the work we’ve done on the FPS. We still intend to release Star Marine proper (with Gold Horizon and the HQ game mode and all that.) In all likelihood, you’ll see Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 first and then Star Marine proper shortly after that… and we’ll continue to update with more details on both as they’re locked down.
When Tom says stand alone product, does he mean stand alone game mode or stand alone game? That TenTonHammer article asserted that the Star Marine game mode has been cancelled and all of its features rolled into the Persistent Universe instead, which is not true. They’re still planning to release the Star Marine game mode, which features tournament-style mechanics that aren’t found in the PU sandbox.
Cloud Imperium has never implied that Star Marine will be a stand alone game, as in a seperate program that you launch on your desktop. I don’t know where Tom got that from, I assume he’s just confused. I imagine it’s easy to get confused because they have intentionally designed Arena Commander and Star Marine to resemble actual games in and of themselves, and indeed in the Star Citizen universe they are actually video games that you play by climbing into a simulation pod.
In that quote you posted, when they say “Star Marine proper”, they are referring to the Star Marine mode proper. When the Baby PU launched and included the pistol and assault rifle, some people thought the separate mode was no longer being developed.
