C’mon, we all know that’s what you really think! ;)

Multi-quoting sometimes causes disruptions in the space/time continuum.

Don’t get me started on my Robotech Tactics RPG Kickstarter. :(

So does that mean that if they release a product that fulfills the original kickstarter pitch combined with the stretch goals (some of which are trivially small or already fulfilled), then you will no longer consider the game deplorable or a con job?

So does paying hundreds of dollars for pixels.

People are so focused on the trainwreck aspect of this project that they fail to recognize the social and cultural relevance, which is way, way more interesting. People gotta believe in something. I think it’s in our nature. It is SO goddamn powerful.

This shit is close to a religion. Maybe they can go tax free! Wheee!

You are right. We can only hope it’s being filmed as it would be a fascinating documentary.

A Waco style siege ending would cement it’s place in history.

I recently paid $120 for OVERLOAD by the guys that made the original Descent. I could have paid $25 and still gotten the same game! 12 people paid $1000 just to get their picture in the game. $1000 for a jpeg! And would you believe it, even though they hit their goal they’re selling pledges on their own website.

Have we all been conned?

Or being endorsed by a Political candidate to get the votes out. Talk about the silent majority! WTF are people really concerned with??? Gimme a pure VR world where I can carve a place. Fuck the real world that is controlled by the economic elite. I STILL thing that Snow Crash will ultimately be correct…

That’s probably not the best comparison you could have made, given that the Overload devs released a free playable prototype on Steam, produced with about two months of work, that - as a game - shits on anything that RSI have produced with their $100m+ budget and several years of development. And that was before their Kickstarter even ended.

So the funding model is not the issue here, it’s 100% about the quality of the game released?

Ahem. Not about the mechanics of the game. Is about the vision… man. Don’t you see that?

I think fewer people would have a problem with the funding model if RSI had delivered something more substantive for their budget by now, certainly.

Krazykrok, so improbably practical. Your awesome.

Because RSI understood that the folks looking for a vision completely outnumbered those that were practical… and maybe drank their own koolaid??

Working with a hangover is such a bitch. That’s when you rely on your slaves.

Absolutely. I have been wrong many times. I’m sure I will be wrong many more times. This might be one of them. :)

That has always been the case. When the game is released and isn’t a Molyneaux, all will be forgiven because everyone will be screaming how amazing it is.

The difference, in the case of a Molyneaux, is that people were just out $50-$60 on the game if it was a turd. That amount of money would barely even get you a timeshare on a lot of these imaginary ships!

That is an important difference. The people that pay the base price for the 1.0 game will be reaping the benefit of the people paying hundreds or thousands for ships. If the $60 players get a great game, then they made out. I can’t even imagine what kind of game would need to ship to actually be worth the prices some people are paying.

If Star Citizen is a religion, I have lost the faith.

2012
I started out excited, but guarded, as I had been a part of some kickstarters that had majorly crashed and burned. So I saw they had met their funding and said to myself “They got enough to make the game!, I will buy it when it comes out.” Left it at that, skeptical… but excited at the possibilities.

2013
Original space flight “Backers get to fly their ships Alpha” date flies by. Hmm, I guess they are behind, boy have they made some money on this though. Oh? A “Hanger Module” to view your purchased digital goods? Neat, but not a game yet. 15 Million from backers now! Nice. They are really going to make this good.

2014
Original planned release date flies by, but Arena Commander came out. It is very much an Alpha, bare-bones, but at least something to play with. Gosh dang they are selling digital ships for a LOT of money. That seems kind of sketchy, considering they still haven’t made their original release date. Oh? 50 Million Dollars? Wow. Love those digital ship ads, but… where is the game progress. Skepticism rising.

2015
Star Marine FPS “cancelled” Sataball? Where is the Alpha that was supposed to be out in 2013? It drops in December 2015, and is a bit light on content for being 2 years late. Ridiculous information comes out showing the lavish amounts of work going into Squadron 42 (which is not the persistant universe game I wanted). Press conference comes and goes, shows some stuff off, but not much outside of Squadron 42 mo-caps and some glitchy gameplay. Negative Press is everywhere. Strife within the company? Shouting matches/flame wars ensue. Derek Smart Emerges.

2016

Game has now raised $110 Million dollars, and will lack features listed in stretch goals set at the $65 Million dollar mark, when it is released in “TBD 2016”

Fuck me.

$110 Million dollars

Good grief I had no idea it was that much.

I’ll be really happy if anything in this project is a success. Squadron 42? Sure. Sign me up.

But it’s not looking good. At all.
