I looked up some YouTube videos, and it looks janky as all hell. Then I remembered it’s by the same devs who ripped everyone off with Miner Wars 2081.

Another free fly week is up!

Great post, thanks Ryan!

So, what’s the latest on the state of the game? Anything new in the alpha this year? Any announcements regarding the release date for the campaign?

Most recent feature list, from 2.4

Not really a total list, since it’s more about the features added in that version, but provides some decent summarizations of the size of the game, etc.

Also, 2.5 (with a new station -and I would think new missions, but I dunno-, limited factional warfare and other stuff, most importantly ship customization) has been up in the test servers for a while and will probably be released soon.

Soon as very soon, since they apparently have a Gamescon event set up for tomorrow, and they tend to release things around those, so we will hear many news then.

Given the development speed on this, I think their 100 star systems goal (I think it was 20-30 fleshed up star systems, with the others being station driven as in Elite) seems unatainable. I am more curious to see how much the campaign is delayed and what they announce about it.

Can Chris Roberts apply for RSI to become a church, reading their forums it would seem like some of the things people believe would make them applicable to register as an organized religion.

L. Ron always said that’s where the real money is!

He’d totally avoid taxes!

Popped over to RSI to see if the ridiculous factor is really true. I saw a combat journal and clicked on it expecting some game play description of a ship. This is what I got…

Turns out to be pure fantasy written by some hired writer. Zero game play description. The comments by the fans are interesting. Some people may actually think they can experience the things written in there in the final game!

I dunno, seems pretty clearly marked as lore. Even most of the comments seem to be about corroborating with other pieces of lore or speculating what type of ship the protagonists were flying.

I was not familiar to the terms they use. So I saw “Combat Journals” on the front page, I thought it was a description of a play through.

Well, it has been nearly a year since the Escapist Article and all the controversy around it…I see the mag worked really hard on developing the ‘investigation’ and sources further as they said they would…

I have not been following the game’s progress, but in a nutshell, where are they feature and release-wise? Also are there quality issues with the stuff that has been released?

Feature wise they are still really far away from the goal. One year ago, as the persistent MP was starting to roll out, I though they might had been able to ramp out content production as the systems fell into place.

Right now, while there’s progress, it feels we are about 4-5 years away from full release, if they keep to the current vision. I don’t know if the model is going to be sustainable without a hard injection of cash from SQ42’s release (which we don’t still know when it will release, I very much doubt it will be in less than a year).

As for the quality of released stuff: I think it’s astounding. Still janky, for sure, but extremely impressive technically and very promising gameplay wise. And the bugs are squashed at a reasonable pace for the complexity. It’s just that I can’t see them doing a game the size they want at the current quality level, unless they are able to grow a lot…

That post is marked “Spectrum Dispatch”, which is their category for lore posts. They use these to flesh out the backstory of their universe.

“Combat Journals of the Pytheas” is the description of that article/short story.

The Games on presentation is on right now: http://www.twitch.tv/starcitizen?sr=a

They have been detailing the 2.5 (out soon) features and what new ships will be flyable. Now they are covering 2.6 and Star Marine. Once that’s covered, Roberts promised a look at what comes beyond 2.6.

Wendelius

Apparently, 3.0 is due by the end of the year.

They are about to demo the planetary tech, I believe (a mix of procedural generation and handcrafting), with a bigger demo coming post Gamescom.

  • Item 2.0: More complex contextual interactions with objects which Roberts say allow more gameplay interactions (like repairing the spaceship in combat)
  • StarNetwork 1.0: First iteration of the netcode refactoring
  • Subsumption 1.0: the AI system
  • Mission 1.0: The AI enables a new mission system

Gotta’ love the Gamescon audience for keeping up the enthusiasm after all this time.

Yep. They seem to be having a good time.

It’s a fun presentation and Roberts is enjoying himself.

The demo is starting…

The shiny Freelancer makes me drool…

Every planet fully rendered. Land and walk anywhere. The one they are showing right now is about 2000KM in diameter.

The fact that this hasn’t crashed at all, even with plenty of opportunities to do so, has impressed me a bit. I still expect it to be released in 2023, but this gives me some hope.
