Thanks for that video. As the video says, minecraft and infiniminer are fundamentally different kinds of games. While it was inspired by infiniminer, it was not a copy. And again as the video stated, all games are inspired by other games. I still stand by my statement that minecraft was the first game of its kind, defining an entirely new genre.

I just hope other game developers take the ball and run with it and add something new to the formula and make yet another new kind of game.

Fortresscraft evolved kind of does this, however, IMHO, it is a very flawed implementation and could greatly be improved / built upon.

Wish, granted.

Check Steam for “open world sandbox”.

Edit: except If I misunderstood you. There are many games that share ideas with minecraft, in every sense of these words. Game developers do noticed the billion dollars Notch got from minecraft. Theres no scarcity of that.

You may have misunderstood me. I am not talking about other minecraft clones. The only thing minecraft itself lacks is better graphics. I am fine with just a high-rez texture pack. I am talking about a new game type with deep roots in minecraft.

For example: Take factorio and cross it with minecraft and you get Fortress craft evolved. This is not a simple survival crafter like the 100s of EA games on steam.

I posted a response in the Minecraft thread.

Happy Star Citizen July Blog Day everyone!!

Welcome back Derek

Can I say that I love the image of Derek in a top hat and grand mustache?

Because I do.

Yeah, it’s awesome. :)

It would be even better if there were, say, spit curls just barely visible under the brim of the top hat.

LOL!! Yeah. If it’s one thing this train-wreck has generated, it’s a bunch of amazing memes. I have an entire thread cataloging them; though I tend not to catalog the NSFW ones.

I like this one too. :)

My brain is melting from the possibilities.

Well, the writing there is better than the writing in the video that inspired that image, I’ll say that much. ;)

Rule 34. No exceptions.

LOL!!!

And anyone who hasn’t read the accompanying newspaper articles paralleling this to the Titanic is missing out on some classic writing. I particularly enjoyed the part about the “Environmental Impact” on the North Atlantic Sabertooth Whale.

For those who are actually interested in the procedural planet (moon) tech in 3.0, RSI has posted a really cool video yesterday that shows examples of the procedurally generated planet surfaces and then dives into the tech and what’s needed to make the transition seamless from space to first person on the ground.

The segment is from 12’ into the video to the 28’40" mark:

They also touch on multiplayer and end with a 2’ video showing all the tech coming together and what it looks like as you switch on the various components.

Looking forward to exploring some of those worlds.

I was thinking; if they just worked on SQ42 from the Kickstarter and onwards, and then used the tech/assets created there for SC after SQ42 was released, could I have been playing SQ42 right now?

Sure. They wasted a metric shitton of resources, money, and time on the first-person shooter stuff. For me at least, that was the point when I knew SC was in serious trouble, when they lost their focus on outer space.

A good question. Best answer is: “probably, if someone managed to keep Chris Roberts’ ambitions under control”.

On the other hand, CIG would have far less money than they have now, and Star Citizen would take at least 4-5 more years to come out, but it would potentially be in a better place right now.

Uh, isn’t Squadron 42 supposed to have FPS sections?
