If we’d make it to 2025 I’d count that as a win, irregardless of Star Citizen being released by then, or not.
Interesting that they talking about moving from 32 to 64 bit… this game was kickstarted in 2012 was it not… You’d have thought they would have targeted 64-bit even back then…
You know, this thread is a lot more more welcoming and interesting as a discussion hub for the game when news are posted and we get to discuss them. Sure, development is crawling, actual news come slowly and having concerns/doubts is understandable. Derek pointing us to his blog makes sense.
But it’s a pity that, for each post about the game, many posters simply jump in to post fresh witticisms like “Ha, ha. They sell JPGs” or “I look forward to playing it when I’m 90”. Haven’t we done those to deaths? Can’t we let discussion about the game and questions about the weird and too all encompassing design breathe a bit?
For those of use who follow the game and actually try and post news or the odd video diary, it would make the thread so much more relevant and our posts wouldn’t get immediately swallowed by those.
Not that I want the police the thread. Just asking…
We have NOT.
I can’t speak for others, but for me this is a way of coping with the sad and depressing reality that this game has become for me. I went from excited to tepid to barely-giving-a-crap to super cynical over its lifespan, and I don’t see this improving any time soon.
Wait until Alpha 3.2 maybe.
Ah, carry on then. I certainly wasn’t targeting you personally. And we wouldn’t want a depressed spaceship lover. :)
But you have to admit this thread can not be the most welcoming place to those interested in the development.
Still, if that’s the way posters want it to be… As I said, it’s not my place to police anything.
This is true, but I think it’s representative of the…bitterness that’s been growing in response to this project. Not excusing it at all, but it’s just tough to remain enthusiastic through the minefield of emotion this game’s development has become.
I was not expecting Basil Rathbone…
I’ve been trying to keep my cackling to a minimum because while I have no sympathy for Chris Roberts, I do feel bad for those involved in the project. It’s a game I’d like to see, I just don’t think I will.
Are you being flippant, or are you still convinced that there will literally be no game ever? At this point, I think the much more legitimate question is what the scope will be and whether it will make for good gameplay.
Don’t really have much doubt that Star Citizen will be a thing. Heck, it already is. Sorta. Whether that thing comes close to matching the ambitious scope or is actually fun? TBD.
I’m more concerned with Squadron 42, which is the game (spiritual successor to Wing Commander) that I actually wanted to play.
But maybe also becoming a moot point for me. Gen 2 VR will come out in the next year or two, and I’ll probably be pretty spoiled on spacey VR experiences.
I think we’ll see an article in Gamasutra or IGN about CIG not making payroll, they’ll go bankrupt, and their IP and assets will be passed around while fans keep their hopes up for a while. Likely, eventually, something will be released by whoever ends up owning that property. But it won’t be anywhere remotely approaching the ambition of the ponderous leviathan they’re supposedly working on now.

When do you think this is gonna happen?
That would require their crowdfunding to dry up. Which, as of this month, is still tracking almost perfectly with last year.
People aren’t going to continue buying $250 spaceships for a game that never actually releases. Eventually, they’ll come to their senses. When? Who knows. I find it difficult to put myself in the mindset of someone who would do such a thing. It’s a type of madness.
Backers are placated by updates to the Alpha, they are experiencing the development of the game in real time. The release date mostly matters to people who would never buy an Early Access product anyway.

The crowd funding is also vulnerable to being pulled back out via refunds which are definitely occurring. There’s no reasonable external way to estimate the rate of refunds right now, but it’s not just that funding can dry up but that it can also get refunded. I think it’s very plausible to see more and more people pull their money back out of the game as they see a longer and longer event horizon to seeing the more expensive ships being realized in the game.
The hell you say. When I backed the Kickstarter, the release date was 2014! I actually believed that, which has led to my general feelings of ennui since.
Ship production isn’t really being delayed. They have a separate department that works on the ship pipeline, so it wouldn’t be impacted by stuff like procedural planets. The two most expensive ships in the game, the Idris frigate and the Javelin destroyer, have pretty much had their art completed and are awaiting the implementation of additional multi-crew gameplay features.
My point is that people this year are buying pledges at the same rate as last year thus far. Even though we’re in 2017 with no release date in sight.

I think you’ve got a more credible complaint than most, since a lot of the folks who are complaining don’t actually have any skin in this game anyway.
However, if you don’t mind me asking, did you give their kickstarter some huge amount of money? It was a long time ago, but when I got the bounty hunter package, I think it was, what, $40?
I mean, presumably you’re not one of the folks who handed over thousands of dollars to them.
