So, and I don’t mean this antagonistically, why do you actually care about this stuff?

It’s a pretty major story in our hobby right now. Lots of people are interested and care, beyond an individual contribution. Hell, if this thing implodes, crowdfunding for games is dead (whether or not anyone thinks that’s a good thing is beside the point).

I didn’t invest with Bernie Madoff but I was still interested in the story.

Nah. Crowdfunding for games won’t die based on this.

I want to play wing commander 6.

What, the Wing Commander movie just wasn’t enough for you?

I wouldn’t go that far, but there’s a good chance it will change things in some significant manner, especially if it fails in some kind of spectacular way.

Well, I guess we wait and see. We probably won’t have to wait too long now to see if that’s the case.

Eve online is a good game, but it’s essentially flying avatars with hit points, it’s a very simple system with combat being very different than many imagine. When it comes to simulation, it doesn’t hold a candle to elite or star citizen imho, but they aren’t quite the same game either…

From a entirely agnostic view point, and funding that SC gains may arguably be taking away funding from a more deserving team or teams.

Elite Dangerous got out of the door fantastically. But I cannot see how another crowd fund project promising a fraction of what SC promise can gain traction in the current state of affairs. With SC being the giant in terms of mindshare AND funding they are getting.

Hopefully they succeed and everyone wins.

Yeah, it was something I really dislike too. Just feels too gamey (a trend in RPG combat already) while I prefer the simulation aspects of RPGs/

FTL and Divinity Original Sin were 2 big successes as well.

Edit: sorry, thought you were just talking about Kickstarted successes, not the nostaglia/legendary dev angle

Dual Universe was able to successfully crowdfund last year, although they brought in a third of what Elite: Dangerous raised.

Neat! Great for my pessimistic view to be proven wrong. =)

I thought of funding it, but then figured…what has Garriott done in the last two decades ? [edit - except getting millions from a lawsuit for a crappy MMORPG). I put him in the same space (pun intended) as Chris Roberts, which is why I didn’t put any money into SC. They were both talented people who had the skills to take advantage of the time in which they were in. They got a lot of my money back then. They deserve their riches. But then time moved on. They’re both just coasting on inertia, which is cool if you did something when young that can carry you on…but will eventually end when die-hard fans like me say “enough”.

Top notch Kickstarter. Had no qualms about adding more gold for the 2nd one.

Hmm. I wonder if Star Citizen will be out quicker than it took Duke Nukem Forever to be released.

DNF took 14 years, Star Citizen is at 5 years, so hey, lot of time still :)

SC in its current state is better than the clusterfuck that eventually came out as DNF.

I will add to that list:
3. I want CIG to go balls-up bankrupt so they can be a cautionary tale. (The only person I would feel for is Brian, and I may crowd-fund his $120 just so I can get that off my conscience.)

For a second I thought I was in P&R and was genuinely shocked to see someone positive about the state of things in South Carolina.

I too agree that South Carolina the state is better than Duke Nukem Forever the game.

Why? I would love to play the games they’re supposedly creating. I’m rooting for them to succeed. I’m simply not optimistic about their chances.
