Wouldn’t it have been “smarter” to make this game like Eve Online - initial buy-in and then a monthly fee once the universe was live? That would motivated CIG to produce a functional galaxy yet still allow for an ongoing income to fund improvements and such?
$180 million is a mind-boggling amount of money, and 6 years since the campaign start is equally boggling.

Well, maybe not smarter. But this game is being made by people in the gaming industry… my layman point of view tells me that if their goal was really to make an awesome game - there was likely a better route to it.
