Star Citizen - Chris Roberts, lots of spaceship porn, lots of promises

Same here. I wrote the money off in my head a long time ago.

Oh yeah, totally.

I put down whatever is the reward just over $100. At this point I’m considering it a schadenfreude investment in the sweet nectar of the tears of the CIG faithful when Star Citizen finally implodes and Croberts bails.

I hope he doesn’t make bail. :)

Do you really think Star Citizen is going to implode at this point? I doubt it, they are still doing well for revenue I believe and they do have ‘something’, what ever that is. Though the scale is somewhat different, we have seen projects in the past do much less in delivery.

The scenario that the ‘final’ product is going to be years away and much different/less than what the promises and imaginations made it out to be is very likely, but I think total implosion is fairly far fetched, unless things like the Crytek lawsuit, etc. derail the thing in terminal ways.

So like the dreamer investment, the schadenfreude one will probably also not pay off the desired dividends either.

They have an engine which by all accounts is incapable of providing the game that has been promised. It may have worked for the KS envisioned game, but not for what it has since morphed into. What else is left but eventual implosion?

Implosion implies a collapse of the project. Many titles have delivered far less than promised and they have not imploded. Mind you, saying it will not implode is very different than saying it will be any good.

Maybe it won’t implode, but it’ll begin to teeter and wobble, and then it’ll eventually fall down and fade away.

After the Crytek thing resolves, they’ll switch to Unity. ;)

Maybe HeroEngine will give them a sweet deal.

Or Gamebryo.

You are at a space station.

} N

You are in a hangar. There are two space ships here.

} Look at ships

The first ship is very large and looks very expensive. It is not yours. The second ship is small and rather wimpy looking. It is yours.

} Enter wimpy ship

I’m sorry, I don’t understand that.

} Enter my ship

You are sitting in the cockpit of your wimpy ship. You see a bobblehead on the dash. There is a button labeled ‘LAUNCH.’

} Take bobblehead

Taken.

} Press LAUNCH

I’m sorry, I don’t understand that.

} Press button

Klaxons ring out as the ship’s engines power up. The hangar doors open. Your ship launches.

You are now in outer space. You see a space station and a large blue planet below.

} Activate warp drive

I’m sorry, I don’t understand that.

} Fire engines

You don’t have enough power to do that.

} Shut off cockpit lights

It is dark. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Fixed that for you. ;)

I would play this game. Ain’t even kidding.

They supposedly don’t have an engine that works with the game requirements. If so, then there’s not anything to deliver.

Maybe they hope the next generation of hardware will save them.

I can’t believe I didn’t back this. Wing Commander was probably my favorite game of all time, and this is exactly the sort of pre-order scam I often fall into. I am ecstatic that my only stake in this game is hoping it eventually releases and that it’s good. I’d love to play what they promised.

The Derpspace vertical slice looks really good!

It’s not a problem you can just throw hardware at, as far as I can tell. If you up the scale of the game world, you have to fake reality some other way (which Cryengine and derivative was never meant to do), as the number of in-game interactions quickly make simulation intractable.
They also pretty much stated they needed new netcode a few months ago, which we discussed here at the time that it was going to get forever to get right, because that’s what always happens to everyone.

I suspect it was probably scripted. Still, the framerate was nice and steady, which is more than I can say for the competition.

It’s completely unfair to come in here and throw around accusations like that without proof. You’re just one of those haters that wants everyone to be as miserable as you are while we wait patiently to enjoy this true turning point in human civilization.
